About Laingsburg
Also known as. Home of the Wolfpack (Laingsburg schools' athletic identity). Formerly "Nebraska" (1841-1860 post office name).
History. The site was home to a 1600s Chippewa (Ojibwe) village called Wassololo, located where the city now stands. Founded in 1836 by Dr. Peter Laing, born in New York in 1788 to Scottish immigrant parents; he practiced medicine in Ann Arbor from 1833 before arriving and building a log-house tavern and inn at Fenner Road and Grand River Road. A post office opened in 1841 under the name 'Nebraska,' and the community reverted to 'Laingsburg' in 1860 when the Jackson, Lansing & Northern Railroad (later Michigan Central) came through. Grand River Road, part of the main route between Pontiac and Grand Rapids, served as the original main street. Incorporated as a village in 1871 and elevated to city status in 1951. A community band was organized around 1863, and an Opera House built in 1910 doubled as a roller-skating rink.
Local economy. Small bedroom/commuter community roughly 15-20 miles northeast of Lansing and the state capitol complex. Historically an agricultural and rail-shipment point along the Michigan Central line. Laingsburg Community Schools is a central local institution and employer. Recreation and tourism tied to adjacent Sleepy Hollow State Park and Lake Ovid.
Culture and community. Laingsburg High School athletic teams compete as the Wolfpack, a strong local identity including cross country. Lions Springtime Festival held in May, with a community parade. Harvest Festival hosted each fall at Sleepy Hollow State Park just north of town. Local band tradition dating to about 1863.
What makes Laingsburg distinct. For nearly two decades (1841-1860) the town was officially named 'Nebraska,' predating the U.S. state of Nebraska. The city sits atop the former Chippewa village of Wassololo. Anti-tax activist Robert 'Bob' Tisch, known for the property-tax 'Tisch Amendment' and third-party campaigns, resided in the Laingsburg area. The 48848 ZIP code covers a far larger area than the roughly 1.7-square-mile city itself, reaching nearby state-park land.
Small, family-oriented Lansing-area community centered on outdoor recreation and family activities
Notable. Named for Dr. Peter Laing, who operated a tavern and stagecoach stop on the Pontiac-to-Grand Rapids stage route.
