The first unit of Hotel Lakeside was built in May 1875 to house growing crowds; President Rutherford B. Hayes visited the hotel in 1891 and Civil War veteran reunions in the 1870s drew figures including Ulysses S. Grant. Central Auditorium was completed for the 1929 season and dedicated June 29-30, 1929; it was rededicated as Hoover Auditorium in 1949 in memory of longtime general manager Arthur L. Hoover.

The community is operated by Lakeside Chautauqua (the Lakeside Association), a nonprofit whose grounds require a paid Chautauqua Pass and Auto Pass to enter from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Its economy is seasonal tourism and lodging, anchored by the historic Hotel Lakeside and roughly 900 cottages held on renewable 99-year land leases.
