History. In 1923 developer Louise Lathrup Kelley purchased a 1,000-acre tract in Southfield Township to build the planned "Lathrup Townsite." Her covenants required masonry construction and set minimum build costs to guarantee quality, and attached garages were designed into homes decades before they became standard. Kelley bundled forward-looking amenities, including a shuttle to shopping areas and automobile financing packaged together with home financing. The community incorporated in 1953 as the first incorporated municipality in Southfield Township; Kelley stayed active in city affairs until her death in 1963. In 1998 much of the city was designated a National Register Historic District covering roughly 1,200 properties. Mid-20th-century housing covenants once barred sales to Black families; the city today is majority African American (about 62% at the 2020 census), a reversal of that history.
Local economy. Primarily a residential enclave of about 4,088 residents (2020) packed into just 1.5 square miles. Commercial activity concentrates along the Southfield Road corridor, with the city functioning within the larger Southfield business orbit.
