Lauderhill is a Broward County city west of Fort Lauderdale that began in the late 1950s as a planned community of affordable, mass-produced homes. Once a Jewish snowbird and retirement enclave, it has become one of the most Caribbean-American cities in the United States, with the nation's highest concentrations of Jamaican and Haitian ancestry. It is also home to the only International Cricket Council-certified stadium in the United States.

About Lauderhill
Also known as. Jamaica Hill.
History. Incorporated on June 20, 1959, as a planned community developed by Herbert Sadkin. The name came from a joke by writer William Safire: when Sadkin noted there were no hills, Safire replied there were 'probably no dales in Lauderdale, either,' yielding 'Lauderhill.' Early homes designed by architect Andrew Geller were sold as complete furnished packages through Macy's for roughly $13,000 to $17,000. One of Geller's Lauderhill house designs traced to the 'Typical American House' concept shown at the 1959 American National Exhibition in Moscow. Through the late 1980s the city was largely a Jewish retirement and snowbird destination before its demographics shifted dramatically.
Local economy. Grew as an affordable-housing bedroom community serving the Fort Lauderdale metro area. Retail and services anchor the local economy, including the Lauderhill Mall, one of Broward County's older shopping centers. The city markets itself as a diverse, family-oriented suburban community rather than a single-industry town. Central Broward Regional Park and its cricket facility support sports tourism, including internationally televised T20 cricket matches.
Culture and community. As of the 2000 census, Lauderhill had the highest percentage of residents of Jamaican ancestry in the U.S. (about 20%) and among the highest Haitian ancestry (about 13%). Caribbean-American culture, including Jamaican food, music, and Carnival-style events, is central to city life, earning it the nickname 'Jamaica Hill.' Cricket is a signature sport thanks to the ICC-certified stadium, reflecting the city's West Indian and South Asian communities. Rappers XXXTentacion and Ski Mask the Slump God came out of the Lauderhill/Broward hip-hop scene. Sister-city ties to Chaguanas, Trinidad and Tobago, and Suzano, Brazil, reinforce the international identity.
What makes Lauderhill distinct. The city's name was literally invented from a pun about there being 'no dales in Lauderdale.' On May 22, 2010, its cricket ground became the first U.S. venue to host a full-member international match (New Zealand vs. Sri Lanka). Comedian Jackie Gleason lived at Inverrary, and the PGA tournament there carried his name. Lauderhill lies in the only part of the contiguous 48 states with a true tropical climate, like much of the Caribbean. It transformed within a generation from a Jewish retirement community into a majority-Caribbean and African-American city.
A central Broward County city that shifted from a Jewish retirement community to a predominantly Jamaican, West Indian and African American population, earning the nickname Jamaica Hill.
