Web Design for Lenexa, Kansas

Lenexa is a fast-growing Kansas City suburb in Johnson County that once shipped so much high-quality spinach it was crowned the Spinach Capital of the World in the 1930s. Today it pairs that farm-town heritage with a modern, master-planned Lenexa City Center anchored by the region's first year-round indoor food hall, and it is the corporate birthplace of GPS-maker Garmin. Frontier gunfighter Wild Bill Hickok even staked a homestead claim here years before the town existed.

AppWT works with Lenexa, KS businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Lenexa

Also known as. Spinach Capital of the World. City of Festivals.

History. Wild Bill Hickok (James Butler Hickok) staked a claim on 160 acres in 1857 at what is now 83rd Street and Clare Road, before he became a famous gunfighter of the American West. The town was platted in 1869 by railroad civil engineer Octave Chanute, who later became a noted aviation pioneer. The name Lenexa derives from Na-Nex-Se (Blackhoof), the widow of Shawnee Chief Black Hoof; a first proposed name, 'Bradshaw,' was declined by the settler it would have honored. Lenexa incorporated as a city in 1907. By the 1930s Lenexa's superior spinach crop, grown in soil with less sand, earned it the title 'Spinach Capital of the World' from the Kansas City Star (circa 1934), a distinction that lasted into the early 1940s.

Local economy. Top employers include United Parcel Service (about 2,087 employees), Quest Diagnostics/LabOne (about 1,954), and Kiewit Power Engineers (about 1,292). Lenexa is the birthplace of GPS and electronics company Garmin. Kiewit maintains a major regional engineering and construction presence in the city. Median household income was about $90,487 (2020 census), with roughly 39.7% of residents holding a bachelor's degree or higher. Population reached 57,434 at the 2020 census, making it the ninth-most populous city in Kansas.

Culture and community. The Great Lenexa Barbecue Battle, held each June, serves as the Kansas state barbecue championship. The Lenexa Spinach Festival each September features a spinach recipe contest, live music, and the assembly of the world's largest spinach salad; the festival began with the Lenexa Historical Society in 1982. SerbFest, hosted each summer by St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, celebrates Serbian food, dance, and music. The Lenexa Public Market, opened in 2017, is a food hall of local merchants with an events space and demonstration kitchen.

What makes Lenexa distinct. Gunfighter Wild Bill Hickok filed a homestead claim on Lenexa land in 1857, twelve years before the town was platted. The town founder-surveyor Octave Chanute later became an influential early aviation experimenter whose work informed the Wright brothers. Notable people connected to Lenexa include actor Paul Rudd, WWE wrestler Baron Corbin, and 'America's Got Talent' winner Grace VanderWaal. The city's Spinach Festival builds what it bills as the world's largest spinach salad each year.
