History. First settled in 1836 by Elijah Woodworth, who built the first log cabin; the settlement was originally named Meekerville after pioneer Benjamin Meeker. Cornell of Spring Arbor after a family he knew in eastern New York; the post office adopted the name in 1841. Incorporated as a village on March 30, 1869, with its first village election held April 12, 1869 (89 votes cast). Became a city in 1968; it is surrounded by Leslie Township, which is administered separately.
Local economy. Leslie Public Schools, educating roughly 1,400 students across four campuses, is a central institution and employer. The city sits in a rural, agricultural stretch of southern Ingham County between the Lansing and Jackson employment markets. US-127 runs just west of town, tying Leslie into the Lansing metropolitan commuter economy. The former White Pine Academy charter school (founded 1999) operated in Leslie until it closed June 30, 2023.
Culture and community. The Blackhawk Festival is an annual mid-August community event centered on a road race through the city's outskirts. Nearby Meridian-Baseline State Park marks Michigan's unusual 'double initial point,' the result of a 19th-century surveying error that makes Michigan the only U.S. state using a double initial point for its public land surveys. Arthur J. Tuttle, a longtime U.S. District Judge, was also born in Leslie.
