Web Design for Linden, Michigan
Linden is a small Genesee County city on the Shiawassee River in the Fenton urban area, just south of the Flint metro. Its heart is the Linden Mill Pond and the 1850 Linden Mill gristmill, billed as the county's oldest building and now home to a library branch and museum. The compact Bridge-Broad Street downtown, on the National Register since 1982, preserves 19th-century Greek Revival and Italianate storefronts.
AppWT serves Linden and the surrounding Michigan area from Livonia, Michigan.
About Linden
History. Settled in late 1835 by brothers Richard and Perry Lamb. The village was platted in 1840 by Consider Warner and Eben Harris, who also built Springer's Hotel that year. First known as 'Warner Mills,' the settlement was renamed Linden around 1850; its post office opened September 23, 1851. Two early mills built in 1837 and 1838 burned down; the present gristmill was built in 1850 by Seth C. Sadler and M. Warren, along with a sawmill across the river. The gristmill changed hands to Israel B. Hyatt (1864) and Myron Harris (around 1880) and operated until 1956. Incorporated as a village in 1871 and changed from village to city status in 1988. A major fire destroyed the historic Union Block on Broad Street in 2007, and the building was demolished that August.
Local economy. Nineteenth-century Linden was a regional center for buggy and barrel manufacturing, cement production, and foundry work built up around its river mills. Today it is a residential city within the Fenton urban area and greater Flint metro, running its own municipal water system on wells. An older-skewing community, with about a quarter of residents aged 65 or older.
Culture and community. The Summer Happening festival, held since 1974 at the Linden High School campus in neighboring Argentine Township. Linden Mills Days, a competing downtown festival launched in 2011. The Linden Mills Historical Society Museum, housed inside the old mill. The Loose Senior Citizen Center, which anchors programming for the city's older residents.
What makes Linden distinct. The Linden Mill is considered the oldest historical building in Genesee County, and the former gristmill now shelters a public library. The town was originally named 'Warner Mills' before becoming Linden around 1850. A rare 'Beach Buggy' carriage built at the local Joe Beach Buggy Factory survives as a historical artifact. An underground gasoline leak affected downtown properties in 2014, years after the 2007 Union Block fire reshaped the streetscape.
Linden is a Genesee County city of about 4,000 residents whose historic downtown centers on the 1871 Linden Mills building along the Shiawassee River, and the city celebrated its sesquicentennial in 2021
Notable. The Linden Mill was the first building in Genesee County added to the National Register of Historic Places, listed in 1972.
