Lynchburg rises over the James River across a cluster of steep hills that give it the nickname the Hill City, a place founded on a Quaker's ferry in the 1750s that grew rich on tobacco. It was the only major Virginia city never recaptured by Union forces during the Civil War and even briefly served as the state's capital in the war's final days. Today it blends deep history with a college-town energy driven by Liberty University and a growing food and manufacturing base.

About Lynchburg
Also known as. Hill City. City of Seven Hills.
History. Founded in 1757 when John Lynch, a Quaker who operated a ferry across a ford of the James River, established a settlement at Lynch's Ferry. Virginia's General Assembly formally recognized the town of Lynchburg in October 1786. Tobacco warehousing and shipping via river batteaux drove the economy in the early 1800s. Lynchburg was the only major Virginia city not recaptured by Union forces before the Civil War's end, and it served as the capital of Virginia for several days in early April 1865 between the fall of Richmond and the Confederacy's collapse.
Local economy. Manufacturing remains central, with regional strengths in steel and metals, nuclear technology, and wireless infrastructure and communications. The Craddock-Terry Shoe Corporation was once one of the largest shoe manufacturers in the country and a major local employer. Lynchburg physician-pharmacist Charles Browne Fleet developed ChapStick lip balm in the city in the 1880s. The city is home to six colleges and universities, with Liberty University the largest and a major economic force.
Culture and community. The Lynchburg International Festival features a Parade of Nations, international cuisine, music, and dance celebrating the city's diversity. The Historic Batteau Festival honors the flat-bottomed James River cargo boats with a multi-day river voyage. The city has one of the longest-running farmers markets in the country and a growing locally owned restaurant and brewery scene. Harlem Renaissance poet Anne Spencer lived in Lynchburg and hosted civil rights leaders at her home, now the Anne Spencer House and Garden Museum.
What makes Lynchburg distinct. The 'Hill City' nickname comes from its seven named hills: College, Garland, Daniel's, Federal, Diamond, White Rock, and Franklin. Medal of Honor recipient Desmond Doss, the conscientious-objector Army medic depicted in the film Hacksaw Ridge, was born in Lynchburg in 1919; his mother worked at the Craddock-Terry shoe factory. ChapStick was invented in Lynchburg. Local lore credits dentist Mahlon Loomis with wireless-signal experiments in the area in the 1860s, well before Marconi, a frequently repeated Lynchburg claim.
