Web Design for Lynn, Massachusetts
Lynn is a working-class coastal city on Massachusetts Bay in Essex County, about 10 miles north of Boston, long defined by shoemaking and later by General Electric's jet engine works. Once the shoe capital of the world, it earned the enduring nickname 'City of Sin' from a taunting rhyme born of its gritty industrial reputation. Today it is one of the most diverse cities on the North Shore, with a historic downtown, a 2,200-acre forest park, and a working coastline.

About Lynn
Also known as. City of Sin. The Shoe City. Shoe Capital of the World.
History. Settled by English colonists in 1629 and named after King's Lynn in England; a local shoemaking ledger dates to 1623, predating the town's formal founding. Grew into the leading shoe-manufacturing center in America; Jan Matzeliger's shoe-lasting machine (patented in the 1880s while he worked in Lynn) mechanized production and helped make Lynn the shoe capital of the world. Shoe manufacturing continued in Lynn from the 1600s until 1981, defining the city's economy and labor identity for centuries. Abolitionist Frederick Douglass moved to Lynn as a fugitive from slavery in 1841 and wrote his first autobiography, 'Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave,' while living there. General Electric's River Works plant became a major manufacturer of aircraft electrical systems and aircraft engines; the first American jet engine work was tied to the Lynn plant during World War II.
Local economy. Historically driven by shoe and leather manufacturing, which dominated the city's economy from the colonial era into the late 20th century. General Electric's Lynn River Works remains a major regional employer, building and testing aircraft and marine engines and related components. Home to Durkee-Mower, maker of Marshmallow Fluff, which has produced the spread in Lynn since an automated factory opened there around 1950. Was the base of Lydia Pinkham's patent-medicine business, one of the most famous 19th-century American consumer-product enterprises.
Culture and community. The Fluffernutter sandwich (peanut butter and Marshmallow Fluff) traces to Lynn-made Marshmallow Fluff, a New England culinary icon still produced in the city. Lynn's industrial and immigrant heritage is preserved at the Lynn Museum, and public murals downtown depict the city's shoemaking past. One of the most ethnically diverse communities on the North Shore, with large Latino, Cambodian, and other immigrant populations shaping its food and neighborhoods.
What makes Lynn distinct. The rhyme 'Lynn, Lynn, the city of sin, you'll never come out the way you went in' has been repeated across Eastern Massachusetts for generations and gave the city its 'City of Sin' nickname. A local shoemaking ledger dates to 1623, six years before the town itself was founded. Marshmallow Fluff, invented in the region, is still manufactured in Lynn by Durkee-Mower. Frederick Douglass wrote his landmark first autobiography while living in Lynn.
