Web Design for Madison Heights, Michigan

Madison Heights is a 7.2-square-mile post-war suburb about 12 miles north of downtown Detroit, packed with more than 1,300 commercial and industrial businesses that sit inside a mostly single-family residential grid. Self-styled the "City of Progress," it is part of Oakland County's Automation Alley and hosts one of the largest Asian supermarkets in southeast Michigan. Nationally, it is unfortunately best known for the 2019 "green ooze" that leaked onto Interstate 696.

AppWT works with Madison Heights businesses from Livonia, a short drive away.

About Madison Heights

Also known as. City of Progress.

History. Incorporated as a city by popular vote on January 17, 1955, and chartered on December 6 of that year, becoming the tenth city government in southern Oakland County. Formed from land that had been part of Royal Oak Township, which shrank steadily between 1921 and 1950 as suburbs broke away and incorporated. Born as a post-war bedroom suburb alongside neighbors Royal Oak, Warren, and Hazel Park. A new municipal building was dedicated April 5, 1963, on West Thirteen Mile Road. Population peaked at 38,599 in 1970 and has declined steadily to about 28,468 as of the 2020 census.

Local economy. Part of Oakland County's "Automation Alley" technology and manufacturing corridor. Contains more than 1,300 commercial and industrial businesses within just 7.2 square miles, plus seven industrial parks totaling about 10 million square feet. Corporate headquarters of Hungry Howie's Pizza. Home to Telway Hamburger System, a 24-hour restaurant famous locally for its sliders. About 60% of the tax base comes from light industrial or commercial property, even though roughly 91% of the housing stock is single-family homes and condominiums. Retail and hospitality footprint includes roughly 23 shopping centers and 11 hotels.

Culture and community. A growing Asian community anchors much of the city's cultural life, including a Chinese Cultural Center and Vietnamese New Year celebrations. 168 Asian Mart, a 38,000-square-foot store described as the largest Asian supermarket in southeast Michigan, is a regional destination. Telway's around-the-clock sliders are a longstanding metro-Detroit late-night institution. Red Oaks Waterpark, an Oakland County park in the city, draws families with a wave pool, triple-flume slides, a river ride, and a large splash pad.

What makes Madison Heights distinct. In December 2019, bright yellow-green "ooze" containing cancer-causing hexavalent chromium seeped onto eastbound I-696 from the shuttered Electro-Plating Services site; the EPA removed more than 300,000 gallons of contaminated liquid, and owner Gary Sayers was sentenced to prison and ordered to repay over $1.4 million. The city's population has fallen every decade since 1970 even as its industrial and commercial base stayed strong. Notable former residents include pro wrestler George "The Animal" Steele and marine-life muralist Robert Wyland.
