History. Incorporated as a city by popular vote on January 17, 1955, and chartered on December 6 of that year, becoming the tenth city government in southern Oakland County. Formed from land that had been part of Royal Oak Township, which shrank steadily between 1921 and 1950 as suburbs broke away and incorporated. Born as a post-war bedroom suburb alongside neighbors Royal Oak, Warren, and Hazel Park. A new municipal building was dedicated April 5, 1963, on West Thirteen Mile Road. Population peaked at 38,599 in 1970 and has declined steadily to about 28,468 as of the 2020 census.

Local economy. Part of Oakland County's "Automation Alley" technology and manufacturing corridor. Contains more than 1,300 commercial and industrial businesses within just 7.2 square miles, plus seven industrial parks totaling about 10 million square feet. In December 2019, bright yellow-green "ooze" containing cancer-causing hexavalent chromium seeped onto eastbound I-696 from the shuttered Electro-Plating Services site; the EPA removed more than 300,000 gallons of contaminated liquid, and owner Gary Sayers was sentenced to prison and ordered to repay over $1.4 million. The city's population has fallen every decade since 1970 even as its industrial and commercial base stayed strong. Notable former residents include pro wrestler George "The Animal" Steele and marine-life muralist Robert Wyland.
