History. The area was Ojibwa territory before French trappers and missionaries arrived in the 17th century; American settlement began around 1820 at the mouth of the Belle River. Platted in 1835 as "Newport" (associated with the Ward family, including Sam Ward) and known by that name for 31 years. Incorporated as the Village of Marine City in 1865, then as a city in 1887. Eber Brock Ward (1811-1875) worked the Marine City docks as a young man, mastered the steamer General Harrison from 1835, and rose to become the "Steamship King of the Great Lakes" and a pioneering steel manufacturer. The Pittsburgh Steamship Company, formed in 1901 by U.S. Steel, became the largest commercial fleet on the Great Lakes, and many of its captains kept homes in Marine City.
Local economy. In the late 19th century it was a major center of wooden shipbuilding and lumber processing, one of the busiest shipbuilding towns on the Great Lakes. The Marine City Salt Works extracted brine, and salt-block and brine evaporation was an important local industry in the late 1800s. The modern economy leans on tourism, dining, and antiques, with roughly ten antique stores clustered downtown. Small-city scale: population about 4,079 at the 2020 census, median age 45.3.
Culture and community. Marine City Maritime Days, a festival running since 1979, fills Nautical Mile Park each summer with a lighted boat parade, fireworks, car show, fishing contest, parade, and juried arts-and-crafts show. The town's live-theater scene is outsized for its population: the 98-seat Snug Theater, the Riverbank Theater in a former bank building, and the Mariner Theatre. Jeff Gutt (b. 1976), current lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots and an X Factor runner-up, is from Marine City.
What makes Marine City distinct. The town carried its plat name "Newport" for 31 years before becoming Marine City in 1865. Early settlers nicknamed the spot "Yankee Point" for the wave of New England and New York migrants who arrived. Eber Ward, who learned the shipping trade on Marine City's docks, went on to help produce some of the first Bessemer steel rails made in the United States.
