History. Roots trace to 1786 when Antoin Morass built a sawmill at Bunce Creek; Zephaniah W. Bunce sailed up the St. Clair River and settled there in 1817. The city grew from three separate settlements, Bunce Creek, Mack's Place, and Vicksburg, which consolidated under the name Marysville in 1859, reportedly named for Mary, wife of settler Nelson Mills. Colonel Andrew Mack ran a mill and general store on the river known as "Mack's Place," which held an early post office. Incorporated as a village in 1919 and became a city in 1924. Engineer C. Harold Wills, formerly Henry Ford's chief designer, relocated in 1919 and founded C.H. Wills & Company, producing the Wills Sainte Claire automobile from 1921 to 1926 (roughly 14,000 vehicles built before it closed). The coal-fired Marysville Power Plant opened in 1922 on the St. Clair River; DTE Energy closed it in 2001 and it was imploded on November 7, 2015.
Local economy. Historic anchor was C.H. Wills's automobile works, which shaped the city's planned layout and infrastructure. Modern industry includes Intertape Polymer, Mueller Brass, Marysville Hydrocarbons (an ethanol plant), and a Chrysler/MOPAR parts distribution center.
