McKinney is the historic county seat of Collin County, a fast-growing Dallas-area city that earned the nickname "Queen of the Prairies" in the railroad era. Built on corn, wheat, and later denim rather than the cotton typical of the South, it now pairs a Victorian downtown square with a booming commuter population and a beer festival that draws tens of thousands each fall.

About McKinney
Also known as. Queen of the Prairies.
History. The area was settled by pioneers beginning around 1841 under colonizer William S. Peters's land program. The city and county are named for Collin McKinney, a land surveyor who helped draft and signed the 1836 Texas Declaration of Independence. The Texas legislature made McKinney the county seat of Collin County on March 16, 1848. When the county courthouse was completed in 1875, it was the tallest building in Texas north of San Antonio.
Local economy. Early McKinney relied on agriculture, notably corn and wheat rather than the cotton common across the South. The Texas Cotton Mill Company opened in 1910, one of only two mills west of the Mississippi making color-print cloth before shifting to denim. Collin County became the sixth-largest cotton producer in the country by 1926. After World War II the economy shifted from farming toward industry, manufacturing, and its modern role as a Dallas-area commuter center; the 2020 population was 195,308.
Culture and community. McKinney Oktoberfest turns 14 blocks of historic downtown into a Bavarian village and has drawn record crowds of more than 75,000, complete with wiener dog races. The Texas Music Revolution music festival is held in the spring/early summer. Downtown hosts the Krewe of Barkus Mardi Gras celebration, Arts in Bloom, a Juneteenth celebration, and Dia de los Muertos events. Independence-week festivities include the Red White and Boom Parade and Fireworks Festival.
What makes McKinney distinct. Money magazine ranked McKinney the No. 1 Best Place to Live in America in 2014. The city is named for Collin McKinney, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, whose first name also gave Collin County its name. Its Oktoberfest features competitive wiener dog races among more than 75 vendors.
