History. First settled in 1834 by Anthony Wells of Albany, New York, joined by James Wells in 1835; the community was first called "Wells Settlement." Renamed Memphis in 1848 when a U.S. post office opened, chosen because the bluff over the Belle River recalled ancient Memphis, Egypt, on the Nile. Incorporated as a village on April 4, 1865, and reached city status in 1953. During the lumber boom, log rafts floated down the Belle River to the St. Clair River en route to Detroit; a depot and grain elevator later moved flour, timber, and livestock to market. Maryglade College, a Catholic seminary, operated in Memphis from 1960 until May 1972.
Local economy. Began as an agricultural farming community, then grew into a combined farm center and mill town. Rail service (Grand Trunk / Pere Marquette era) brought a depot and grain elevator that shipped flour, timber, and livestock and tied the town to Port Huron, Detroit, and Great Lakes trade. By around 1930 the town balanced a twin identity as agricultural center and small industrial town, with a flour mill and elevator defining the skyline. Today serves largely as a small bedroom and farming community, with Memphis Community Schools (the Yellowjackets) among local institutions.
Culture and community. High school teams are the Memphis Yellowjackets (Memphis Community Schools). Memphis Festival Days is the town's signature annual community celebration, held in August. The Belle River corridor historically served as a gathering place for residents and powered small local shops.
What makes Memphis distinct. The city is split almost evenly between two counties, Macomb and St. Clair. "The Thing," a four-seat single-cylinder steam car built by Thomas Clegg and his English-born father John in 1884-85, ran roughly 500 miles before being dismantled and its engine sold to a creamery; it predated Henry Ford's Quadricycle by about 12 years. Henry Ford reportedly wanted to buy the Clegg machine shop for Greenfield Village, but it was razed in 1936, shortly before his offer. The Cleggs never gave their invention a real name, which is why it became known simply as "The Thing."
