Meridian is Idaho's second-most-populous city and its fastest-growing, a family-centric Treasure Valley hub that has exploded from a quiet farming and dairy town into a suburban powerhouse west of Boise. It takes its name from the Boise Meridian, the north-south survey line that anchors Idaho's public land grid. Today it is known for waterparks, big-box retail villages, and corporate headquarters rather than the fruit orchards and prune dryers of its early days.
AppWT works with Meridian, ID businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.
About Meridian
History. The settlement was established in 1891 on the Onweiler farm and originally called Hunter. Around 1893 the town site was platted on homestead land belonging to Eliza Ann Zenger, whose husband Christian filed the plat and named it Meridian; early settlers came largely from Missouri. An I.O.O.F. lodge organized in the 1890s named itself Meridian because it sat on the Boise Meridian survey line, and the town took the name; Meridian incorporated in 1903. Early-1900s settlers planted fruit orchards and built fruit-packing houses and prune dryers along the railroad tracks, growing apples and Italian prunes. During the Great Depression the Ada County Dairymen's cooperative creamery opened in 1929, cementing dairying as a local mainstay. Meridian has grown explosively in the 21st century, with roughly a 33% population increase since 2020, making it the fastest-growing city in Idaho.
Local economy. Blue Cross of Idaho is headquartered in Meridian, employing hundreds of people at its local campus. Scentsy, the wickless-candle and scented-wax company, is headquartered in Meridian and has been recognized among America's best midsize employers. Jacksons Food Stores, a regional convenience-store chain, is based in Meridian. St. Luke's Meridian Medical Center, a large full-service hospital that grew from a 1996 outpatient facility, is a major employer (St. Luke's is Idaho's largest employer system). Brighton Corporation, a major Treasure Valley real-estate developer and homebuilder, is based in Meridian. The historic economy was rooted in fruit orchards and dairy farming.
Culture and community. Meridian Dairy Days, the city's oldest festival, is a summer tradition rooted in the town's dairy heritage. The Village at Meridian is a large open-air retail and dining destination with roughly 80 retailers and 30 restaurants. Roaring Springs is billed as the Northwest's largest waterpark, paired with the adjacent Wahooz Family Fun Zone amusement park. Meridian Speedway hosts stock-car racing. The Children's Museum of Idaho and the Initial Point Gallery at Meridian City Hall serve the city's arts and family-tourism scene.
What makes Meridian distinct. The city is named for the Boise Meridian, one of 35 principal meridians in the U.S. Public Land Survey System, adopted in 1867. Meridian was originally named 'Hunter' before adopting the survey-line name. The Boise Meridian's Initial Point butte was chosen partly because it was far enough west that the meridian line could run north all the way to the Canadian border through Idaho's panhandle. Once a quiet bedroom community, Meridian is now often described as the most family-centric destination in Idaho.
