Miami Gardens is Florida's largest majority-Black city, a young municipality (incorporated 2003) built from a cluster of northern Miami-Dade suburbs long known collectively as Carol City. It is the home of Hard Rock Stadium, hosting the Miami Dolphins, the Miami Open, the Formula One Miami Grand Prix, and World Cup 2026 matches. The city is also a wellspring of Miami rap, from Rick Ross to Flo Rida, and hosts the annual Jazz in the Gardens festival.

About Miami Gardens

Also known as. Carol City.

History. Miami Gardens incorporated on May 13, 2003, consolidating seven unincorporated neighborhoods: Andover, Bunche Park, Carol City, Lake Lucerne, Norland, Opa-locka North, and Scott Lake. The community grew as middle- and upper-income African American families moved north from Liberty City following construction of I-95 in the late 1960s. Shirley Gibson, a local activist, served as the city's founding mayor from 2003 to 2012. Community activist Betty T. Ferguson was instrumental in the drive to incorporate the city; a city recreation complex is named for her. Oliver G. Gilbert III (2012-2020) and current mayor Rodney Harris (since 2020) followed Gibson in leading the young city.

Local economy. Hard Rock Stadium, opened in 1987 as Joe Robbie Stadium, is the region's marquee venue; Hard Rock International bought naming rights in 2016 for about $250 million through 2034. The stadium hosts the Miami Dolphins (NFL), Miami Hurricanes football, and the Orange Bowl, drawing major regional tourism. The Miami Open professional tennis tournament is staged on the Hard Rock Stadium grounds. The Miami International Autodrome around the stadium has hosted Formula One's Miami Grand Prix since 2022. Calder Race Course (later Calder Casino) opened in the city in 1971. Higher education anchors include St. Thomas University and Florida Memorial University.

Culture and community. Jazz in the Gardens, launched in 2006, is the city's flagship music festival, held each March celebrating African American music and culture. Miami Gardens (and its Carol City core) is a hotbed of Miami hip-hop, home to artists including Rick Ross, Flo Rida, Lil Pump, and Denzel Curry. Rolling Loud, the influential hip-hop festival, launched its first event in Miami in 2015 and has staged editions at Hard Rock Stadium. Actress Jo Marie Payton and NFL star Andre Johnson are among notable natives. Football culture is central, with Dolphins home games and the Orange Bowl anchoring the local identity.

What makes Miami Gardens distinct. Miami Gardens has the highest percentage of African American residents of any city in Florida (about 66.97%), making it the state's most populous majority-Black city. The 2020 census counted 111,640 residents across about 19 square miles. Between 2008 and 2013 city police recorded roughly 99,980 stops involving more than half the population, including very young children, prompting civil-rights lawsuits and the police chief's resignation. Rappers frequently reference 'Carol City,' the pre-incorporation name that still functions as the area's cultural shorthand.
