History. Settled in 1831 by John Marvin, who first called the place "Tolanville" after his son-in-law; early settlers Bethuel Hack and Harmon Allen arrived the same year. The post office opened in 1833 as "Farmersville" and the community was renamed Milan in 1836. Railroads made the town: the Toledo, Ann Arbor and North Michigan Railway arrived in 1878 and the Wabash Railway in 1880, turning Milan into a shipping junction for farm goods. Incorporated as a village in 1885 and reincorporated as a city in 1967; the city sits in both Monroe and Washtenaw counties. In 1935 Henry Ford bought Milan's 1840s gristmill (now the Community House) and ran a Village Industries operation there, storing and processing soybeans and making ignition coils and plastic parts from roughly 1936 to 1946.

The Federal Correctional Institution, Milan (FCI Milan) is a major local employer; it was activated in 1933 as a "Federal Detention Farm" and is now a low-security men's prison with an adjacent Federal Detention Center. Agriculture and agritourism anchor the surrounding area, including Wasem Fruit Farm (cherries, apples, plums, pumpkins) and Talladay Farms. The Milan Dragway draws motorsports crowds and vendors through the spring, summer, and fall race seasons.
