Web Design for Mission Viejo, California

Mission Viejo is a meticulously master-planned Orange County suburb in the Saddleback Valley, grown from Spanish cattle-grazing rancho land into one of the largest single-project planned communities ever built in the United States, its hillsides blanketed in near-uniform Spanish-mission stucco and barrel-tile roofs. It hosted the road cycling events of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and produced a dynasty of Olympic swimmers through the Mission Viejo Nadadores. It consistently ranks among California's safest cities and among Money magazine's best places to live.

About Mission Viejo

Also known as. "Make Living Your Mission" (official city motto). "MV" (common local shorthand). Part of the Saddleback Valley.

History. Named for Rancho Mission Viejo, a Spanish land grant; the name traces to a 1776 attempt to site Mission San Juan Capistrano in San Juan Canyon before lack of water forced relocation. In 1769 the Gaspar de Portola expedition passed through and claimed the land for Spain; the hilly terrain was long used only for cattle and sheep grazing. Urban planner Donald Bren (later Irvine Company president) and the Mission Viejo Company drafted a master plan in the 1960s placing roads in the valleys and houses on the hills. First appeared as an unincorporated community in the U.S. Census in 1970; much of the buildout was complete by 1980, with housing tracts often selling out before construction. Incorporated as a city on March 31, 1988.

Local economy. Mission Hospital is the city's largest employer (roughly 2,700+ staff) and serves as a regional trauma center. Saddleback College and the Saddleback Valley Unified School District are among the top employers. Marie Callender's restaurant chain has its corporate headquarters in the city. Other major employers include Target and James Hardie Building Products. The city touts economic-development incentives, low development-impact fees, and the absence of any local business tax.

Culture and community. The Mission Viejo Nadadores swim/dive club won national titles in the 1970s-80s and trained Olympians including Shirley Babashoff, Brian Goodell, Dara Torres, and Greg Louganis. Private Lake Mission Viejo hosts members-only concerts, beaches, and summer events. Notable residents include NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez, Guns N' Roses drummer Matt Sorum, Linkin Park bassist Dave Farrell, singer-songwriter Kina Grannis, and actor David Henrie. The city is recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation for its tree-lined neighborhoods.

What makes Mission Viejo distinct. Mission Viejo hosted the road cycling events of the 1984 Summer Olympics; O'Neill Road was renamed Olympiad Road in honor of the Games. In 2021 Money magazine named it among the 50 best places to live in the country, the only Southern California city on that list. It repeatedly ranks among the top-ten safest cities in California, with very low violent-crime rates. The U.S. men's national soccer team trained in the city during the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Homes and shopping centers were built almost uniformly in Spanish-mission style, a signature of Donald Bren's planning.

Master-planned Orange County suburb known for Spanish mission-style architecture and tree-lined neighborhoods.
