Monrovia is the 'Gem City of the Foothills,' the fourth-oldest city in Los Angeles County, with a walkable Old Town on Route 66, the Mayan Revival Aztec Hotel, and Trader Joe's corporate headquarters. Black bears wander down from the San Gabriel wilderness the city voted to protect forever, and its vintage streets are one of Hollywood's favorite stand-ins for small-town America.

About Monrovia
Also known as. Gem City of the Foothills. Gem of the Foothills. Hometown, U.S.A. (Old Town marketing tied to its Route 66 main street).
History. Founded by William N. Monroe, who bought 240 acres in 1884 and, with partners Edward F. Spence, John D. Bicknell, and James F. Crank, laid out a 120-acre townsite centered on Myrtle Avenue and present-day Colorado Boulevard; the first lots sold on May 17, 1886. Incorporated in 1887 as the fourth city in Los Angeles County, after Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Pasadena. Built on land that had been part of Rancho Santa Anita and Rancho Azusa de Duarte; 'Lucky' Baldwin had bought roughly 9,000 acres of Rancho Santa Anita in 1875. Myrtle Avenue, the city's main street, is named for Monroe's oldest daughter, and Monroe's home 'The Oaks' still stands at 250 N. Primrose Avenue.
Local economy. Corporate headquarters of the Trader Joe's grocery chain, which relocated to a larger Monrovia site in 2000. A 'Technology Corridor' of high-tech and bio-tech firms including drone maker AeroVironment, Xencor, Tanner Research, and Parasoft. Research and science institutions such as City of Hope's Beckman Research Institute, ChromoLogic, and the Oak Crest Institute of Science. Old Town retail, dining, and entertainment along historic Route 66.
Culture and community. The Monrovia Street Fair and Market every Friday night in Old Town along Myrtle Avenue, with live music, prepared food, and a farmers market, free to attend. The annual Monrovia Days civic celebration. A thriving Old Town district that doubles as a regional dining and nightlife draw. A busy film-and-television production culture, with the city serving as a frequent shooting location.
What makes Monrovia distinct. Monrovia is one of Hollywood's most-used small-town backdrops, appearing in films including Back to the Future Part II and III, Legally Blonde, American Pie, Never Been Kissed, Father of the Bride, Bird Box, and The Conjuring 2. The 'Aztec' Hotel is actually Mayan Revival, not Aztec; architect Robert Stacy-Judd used the name because it was more familiar to the public, and Golden Age stars like Bing Crosby, Clark Gable, and Tom Mix frequented it. Black bears regularly amble down from the San Gabriel foothills into Monrovia neighborhoods, with residents nicknaming one frequent visitor 'Maddie.' In 2000 residents voted to tax themselves to buy up hillside land and block development, creating a 1,416-acre wilderness preserve protected in perpetuity.
