Web Design for Montclair, California

Montclair is a full-service city of about 38,000 on the western edge of San Bernardino County, straddling the Los Angeles County line in the Pomona Valley. Built on Serrano homeland and later citrus orchards, the city cycled through the names Marquette, Monte Vista and Narod before settling on Montclair in 1958. Today it is a retail and transit hub anchored by the 1.2-million-square-foot Montclair Place mall and the Montclair Transcenter.

AppWT works with Montclair, CA businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Montclair

Also known as. Monte Vista (city's original incorporated name, 1956-1958). Township of Marquette (first modern name, 1897). Narod (early settlement south of Monte Vista, 1907).

History. The Serrano people established the first village along a sycamore-lined creek; in 1774 Captain Juan Bautista de Anza named the creek 'Arroyo de los Alisos' ('stream of the sycamores'), today San Antonio Creek. Mrs. Edward Fraser founded 'The Township of Marquette' in 1897; by 1900 a 1,000-acre tract was surveyed as Monte Vista and divided into 10-, 20- and 40-acre lots to encourage orchards and homebuilding. A settlement south of Monte Vista was established in 1907 and named 'Narod.' The area became a citrus-growing hub; after World War II, veterans used GI benefits to buy homes, and completion of Interstate 10 in the late 1950s made commuting to Los Angeles feasible. Residents incorporated as the city of Monte Vista on April 25, 1956, to avoid annexation, then voted 1,399 to 212 on April 8, 1958, to rename the city Montclair because of postal confusion with another Monte Vista in Northern California.

Local economy. Retail is a major driver, led by Montclair Place, a roughly 1.2-million-square-foot indoor mall with Macy's, JCPenney, an AMC DINE-IN theatre with IMAX, Main Event, Barnes & Noble and more than 100 specialty stores. The Montclair Transcenter is a major commuter bus and rail hub linking Metrolink, Foothill Transit and Omnitrans, served by the Silver Streak bus rapid transit line. Positioned as a westernmost gateway of San Bernardino County and the Inland Empire, roughly 30 miles east of Los Angeles.

Culture and community. Strongly Latino community: about 72% of residents identify as Hispanic or Latino and roughly 43% speak Spanish at home. Notable people include soccer players Nick Rimando and Danny Califf, and musician Terry Kirkman of The Association. Planned mall redevelopment envisions a 'Lifestyle Park' for live music, movie screenings and farmers markets.

What makes Montclair distinct. The city has carried four names in its modern history: Marquette, Monte Vista, Narod and finally Montclair (adopted only in 1958). It sits right on the Los Angeles/San Bernardino county line, bordering Pomona, making it a literal edge-of-the-Inland-Empire city. Terry Kirkman, from Montclair, co-founded The Association and wrote the 1966 hit 'Cherish.'

Montclair is a suburban, predominantly Hispanic city in the Pomona Valley of southwestern San Bernardino County, developed from former citrus orchards after World War II.
