History. Settlement began in 1833 by pioneers from New York; the community was later named for Morenci, Arizona, then a booming copper-mining district. The Chicago and Canada Southern Railway opened a line through Morenci to Fayette, Ohio, in 1872; that rail line was abandoned in 1991. Morenci native Edward D. Stair, born March 29, 1859, became a newspaperman and eventually editor/owner of the Detroit Free Press, and also produced theater, including a production of "The Wizard of Oz." Stair poured wealth back into his hometown, funding the Stair Auditorium, a public library, and a gymnasium. In November 2010 the town gained national attention when the three Skelton brothers (ages 5, 7, and 9) vanished over Thanksgiving weekend; their father was imprisoned and, after the boys were declared dead in 2025, charged with murder in November 2025.
Local economy. Morenci is a rural, agriculture-oriented community; the 2020 census classified 100% of its population as rural. It sits in the fertile farm country of southern Lenawee County near the Ohio line, historically tied to crop farming and the railroad. Morenci Area Schools is a central community institution and employer, serving the surrounding farm townships.
Culture and community. The Morenci Town & Country Festival, the city's signature event, runs Thursday through Saturday of the third week of June each year.
