History. Named for Christian Clemens, a Pennsylvania Mennonite who surveyed the area in 1795 and settled there in 1799 after he and Oliver Wiswell acquired a distillery. Became the county seat of Macomb County on March 11, 1818. Incorporated as a village in 1851 (an earlier 1837 filing was never acted upon) and as a city in 1879. The mineral bath industry began in 1873 after mill operator Dorr Kellogg bathed in warm sulfurous water discovered during failed salt-well drilling; 'The Original' bathhouse opened that year. At its height the city hosted more than a dozen bathhouses plus dozens of hotels and rooming houses, and the spa era ran until roughly the 1970s. The Mount Clemens Sugar Company processed sugar beets from about 1898 to 1950.

MacKenzie, taught Edison telegraphy -- the skill that launched his career. The sprawling Gibraltar Trade Center flea market was a regional weekend institution here until it closed for good in 2017. The mineral springs were an accident -- they were discovered while drillers were unsuccessfully hunting for salt in the 1870s.
