About Mount Morris

Also known as. Hungry Hill (historic nickname of the early pioneer settlement). Coldwater Settlement (historic temperance-colony name).

History. Benjamin Pearson became the area's first landowner in May 1833; Frederick Walker settled the future village site in 1836 and served as its first postmaster and a state legislator. A post office was established July 11, 1837, and the village was first platted under the name 'Dover' in 1862. The arrival of the railroad and a rail station around 1862 spurred growth; Mount Morris incorporated as a village in 1867 and reincorporated as a city in 1929. Fires in 1871-1872 struck the young village, the 1872 fire destroying nearly a quarter of it; a fire department had been organized in 1869. The city was named for Mount Morris, New York, the former home of many of its early settlers.

Local economy. The early economy centered on farming and forestry, then grew around the railroad after 1862. Today Mount Morris is part of the Flint metropolitan economy in Genesee County and operates under a council-manager government. The city has received its water from the Karegnondi Water Authority pipeline since November 2017. The Genesee County Fairgrounds and its E. A. Cummings Center (built 1969) are associated with the Mount Morris area.

Culture and community. The Genesee County Fair - a tradition dating to 1850 (originally in Flint) and now held on Mount Morris-area fairgrounds - is one of mid-Michigan's marquee summer events; the 2026 fair runs August 24-30. The early settlement's strict temperance roots gave the founding community a distinctive teetotaler identity.

What makes Mount Morris distinct. The founding pioneers formed a strict temperance colony known as the 'Coldwater Settlement' - every man abstained from alcohol - while neighbors nicknamed the healthy, hearty group 'Hungry Hill.' Auto pioneer Charles W. Nash, later founder of Nash Motors, worked as a boy farmhand in Mount Morris (for Alexander McFarland at about $12 a month) and learned carpentry there before his rise in the automobile industry. The city was first platted under the name 'Dover' before taking the name Mount Morris. The deadly F5 Flint-Beecher tornado of June 8, 1953 struck the adjacent Beecher area just south of the city; Beecher was named for Charles N. Beecher, an early Mount Morris settler and official.

Mount Morris is a 1.15 square mile city of 3,170 residents in Genesee County that was named after Mount Morris, New York, first platted as Dover in 1862, and is part of the Flint metropolitan area

Notable. Southern terminus of the Flint and Pere Marquette Railroad's first completed 26.1-mile section from East Saginaw, where service began on January 20, 1862.
