Mount Pleasant is a fast-growing Lowcountry town across the Cooper River from Charleston and the fourth-most populous municipality in South Carolina. Its identity centers on the working shrimp-boat fleet on Shem Creek, Gullah-Geechee sweetgrass basket weaving, and the soaring cable-stayed Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge. Despite a population near 90,000, it is still governed as a 'town.'

About Mount Pleasant
Also known as. Mount P (common local shorthand). East Cooper (regional name for the area east of the Cooper River).
History. The site was originally occupied by the Sewee, an Algonquian-speaking tribe; the first English settlers arrived in July 1680 under Captain Florentia O'Sullivan (Sullivan's Island bears his name). The village was laid out by James Hibben in 1803 and took its name from an 18th-century plantation; the Hibben House still stands in the Old Village. The town of Mount Pleasant was created in 1837 when the original village merged with Greenwich village, later absorbing communities such as Hilliardsville. On September 24, 1860, a public meeting in Mount Pleasant produced one of South Carolina's first secession resolutions. Nearby historic plantations tied to founding-era figures include Snee Farm (Charles Pinckney) and Boone Hall.
Local economy. Primarily a residential suburb of the Charleston metro; the 2020 population was 90,801, roughly doubling from about 23,000 (1990) to 47,000 (2000). Commercial shrimping and the seafood trade on Shem Creek are a long-standing part of the local economy and identity. Tourism, retail, and healthcare (including East Cooper Medical Center) anchor local employment. Gullah-Geechee sweetgrass basketry is both a cultural tradition and a roadside cottage industry along US Highway 17.
Culture and community. The Blessing of the Fleet & Seafood Festival, held the last Sunday of April at Memorial Waterfront Park, blesses working shrimp boats for a safe season with a boat parade, seafood, and music. The annual Sweetgrass Festival each July celebrates Gullah-Geechee heritage and centuries-old sweetgrass basket weaving. The Cooper River Bridge Run is a 10K road race from Mount Pleasant across the Ravenel Bridge to downtown Charleston, held in spring and ranked among the largest 10Ks in the United States (roughly the third-largest 10K by finishers). Lowcountry seafood and the Shem Creek waterfront restaurant scene define local dining. Country musician Darius Rucker (Hootie & the Blowfish) is among its well-known residents.
What makes Mount Pleasant distinct. Officially the 'Town of Mount Pleasant,' it is one of the most populous municipalities in South Carolina yet is still governed as a town, not a city. In 2004 it became one of the first U.S. municipalities to pass a 'pay-before-you-pump' gasoline ordinance to combat drive-offs. A stretch of US Highway 17 through town is lined with roadside sweetgrass basket stands, a Gullah tradition passed down for generations. Its shrimp fleet on Shem Creek is a working commercial fishery, not just a scenic backdrop.
