Web Design for Niagara Falls, New York

Niagara Falls, New York, is the American city wrapped around one of the planet's most famous waterfalls, long celebrated as the 'Honeymoon Capital of the World.' It was a cradle of the electric age, where Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse harnessed the river for the first large-scale alternating-current hydroelectric power. Boom-and-bust industry, the Love Canal disaster, and a steep population decline have reshaped a city that now leans on roughly 30 million tourists a year.

AppWT works with Niagara Falls, NY businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Niagara Falls

Also known as. Honeymoon Capital of the World. Niagara Falls USA. The Falls.

History. French explorer Robert de La Salle built Fort Conti near the falls in 1679. The city was incorporated on March 17, 1892, from the merger of the villages of Manchester and Suspension Bridge, with George W. Wright as first mayor. In the 1890s the Adams Power Plant, drawing on Nikola Tesla's and Westinghouse's AC system, delivered the world's first large-scale hydroelectric power from the Niagara River. The Love Canal neighborhood became a national environmental crisis in 1978, prompting President Jimmy Carter to declare the first federal emergency for a non-natural disaster. The Love Canal contamination helped spur creation of the federal Superfund program. The city's population fell from over 102,000 in 1960 to roughly 48,000 by 2020, a loss of more than half.

Local economy. Hydropower remains central: the Niagara Power Project generates about 2.4 gigawatts, making it the largest electricity producer in New York State. Tourism is the dominant industry, with roughly 30 million visitors to the falls each year. The Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino, operated by the Seneca Nation, anchors downtown gaming and hospitality. The 20th-century economy was built on cheap hydroelectric power that drew petrochemical, abrasives, and metallurgical manufacturers. Industrial decline since the 1970s pushed the city to rebuild around tourism and hospitality. Niagara Falls International Airport was renovated in 2009 to support visitor traffic.

Culture and community. Generations of newlyweds made pilgrimages to the falls, cementing the 'Honeymoon Capital of the World' identity. A Little Italy district along Pine Avenue preserves the city's Italian-American heritage. Daredevil lore is woven into local culture, from barrel riders to tightrope walkers. Nightly illumination of the falls in changing colors is a long-running spectacle. Seasonal festivals and the winter Festival of Lights draw visitors in the off-season.

What makes Niagara Falls distinct. Niagara Falls State Park is recognized as the oldest state park in the country, predating the state-park systems that followed. On her 63rd birthday, October 24, 1901, Annie Edson Taylor became the first person to survive going over the falls in a barrel; a cat was sent over first to test the barrel and also survived. The nearby Adams plant made Niagara the birthplace of practical long-distance AC electricity that helped light cities far away. The Tesla monument depicts the inventor seated reading blueprints and was relocated in 2016 to Stedman's Bluff overlooking the falls. Love Canal became shorthand for toxic-waste disaster and reshaped U.S. environmental law.
