Noblesville is the seat of fast-growing Hamilton County, a north Indianapolis suburb where a well-preserved courthouse square and Victorian downtown sit beside one of the busiest outdoor concert amphitheaters in the world. Built up during the 1888 Indiana gas boom and rooted in flour milling, it now blends small-town history along the White River with big-league entertainment and suburban growth.

About Noblesville
Also known as. The Millers (high school athletic nickname, adopted 1925). Heart of Hamilton County.
History. William Conner and his Lenape wife Mekinges established central Indiana's first trading post in the area in 1802. Conner and Josiah Polk laid out downtown Noblesville in 1823; it became the Hamilton County seat in 1824 and incorporated as a town in 1851. The city was named for U.S. Senator James Noble or, by local legend, for Lavina Noble of Indianapolis, to whom Polk was engaged. The Indiana gas boom, sparked by the 1888 discovery of natural gas near 11th and Pleasant streets, funded many Victorian homes and the downtown commercial district. In 1925 the D.C. Stephenson trial, held in Noblesville, helped break the power of the Ku Klux Klan in Indiana. Notable events include the Great Flood of 1913 and a 1919 interurban wreck on the courthouse square.
Local economy. Flour milling defined the early economy, led by the Noblesville Milling Company, maker of Diadem and Kismet flours. Historic industry also included Firestone Industrial Products, the American Strawboard Company, and Union Sanitary Manufacturing Company. As a north Indianapolis suburb, Noblesville grew from 28,590 residents in 2000 to 69,604 in 2020, making it Indiana's 10th most populous city. USA Gymnastics has announced plans to relocate its headquarters to Noblesville by 2028.
Culture and community. Ruoff Music Center, a roughly 25,000-seat amphitheater that opened in 1989 (formerly Deer Creek and Klipsch Music Center), consistently ranks among the top outdoor music venues in the world by ticket sales. The Indiana Peony Festival and Porchfest / Front Porch Music Festival on Logan Street are signature community events. Noblesville Shakespeare in the Park is the second-longest continuously running theatrical production in the state. The Nickel Plate Express runs themed heritage train rides from Hobbs Station in Forest Park, and Nickel Plate Arts (established 2012) serves as an arts incubator. The Noblesville Boom, the NBA G League affiliate of the Indiana Pacers, began play at Riverview Health Arena in fall 2025.
What makes Noblesville distinct. The high school teams are the 'Millers,' a name adopted in 1925 when the Noblesville Milling Company bought team uniforms in exchange for the nickname. Rex Stout, creator of the fictional detective Nero Wolfe, was born in Noblesville. By local legend the city may be named for a woman, Lavina Noble, rather than the senator. Ruoff Music Center has repeatedly ranked first or among the top three outdoor concert venues worldwide for ticket sales.
