About North Port
Also known as. Achieve Anything (city slogan).
History. Developed by the Mackle Brothers through General Development Corporation (GDC), whose employees also served on the city's first council. Incorporated as 'North Port Charlotte' by a special act of the Florida Legislature on June 18, 1959. Residents voted by referendum in 1974 to drop 'Charlotte,' renaming it 'North Port' to establish a separate identity. The city annexed the Warm Mineral Springs area, home to an artesian spring and Little Salt Spring, sites with pre-Columbian Native American evidence. Hurricane Ian made landfall on September 28, 2022, causing severe flooding and nearly destroying the Holiday Park mobile home community.
Local economy. Home to the Atlanta Braves' spring-training complex and player-development operations at CoolToday Park. Wellen Park, a master-planned community of over 7,000 acres, has ranked among the nation's top-selling master-planned communities for years, selling roughly 1,000 homes annually. Consistently ranked as the fastest-growing city in Sarasota County and among the fastest-growing in the U.S. Warm Mineral Springs draws over 150,000 visitors a year, supporting local tourism and wellness spending. Growth-driven construction, retail, and healthcare anchor the local economy.
Culture and community. Warm Mineral Springs is a wellness draw famed for its mineral-rich waters, historically tied to the Ponce de Leon 'Fountain of Youth' legend. Downtown Wellen Park hosts live music Friday through Sunday on an outdoor amphitheater stage. CoolToday Park runs Summer Movie Nights on most Sundays in the summer, turning the ballpark into an outdoor theater. The annual Poinsettia Parade and Festival is a local holiday tradition with festive floats and activities. The North Port Art Center, established in 2007, hosts exhibits and classes.
What makes North Port distinct. Warm Mineral Springs is the only warm mineral spring in the entire state of Florida, an ancient sinkhole once rumored to be the Fountain of Youth. Divers have recovered human remains and artifacts roughly 10,000+ years old from Little Salt Spring, making it a rare Paleoindian underwater site. The American Police Hall of Fame and Museum opened here in 1960 with remarks from presidential candidate John F. Kennedy before later relocating to Titusville. The entire city was essentially platted and sold by a single development corporation, an unusual origin for a major Florida city.
North Port is a large, fast-growing residential city in southern Sarasota County and part of the North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton metro area. It spans a wide area of planned subdivisions and preserves anchored by its natural springs.
