North Richland Hills, universally shortened to NRH, is Tarrant County's third-largest city and a mid-to-high-end suburb in the Mid-Cities corridor between Fort Worth and Dallas. It grew from Clarence Jones's 268-acre dairy farm, incorporated in 1953 after residents were denied annexation by neighboring Richland Hills, and rose from about 500 people to nearly 70,000. About North Richland Hills
Also known as. NRH. The City of Choice.
History. The area was settled starting in 1848 under a W.S. Peters land grant that promised to bring 600 families; Tarrant County was established in 1849 and named for General Edward H. Tarrant, with nearby Birdville as first county seat. Remained a rural farming and ranching community for more than a century. In 1952 dairy farmer Clarence Jones began subdividing his 268-acre farm near present-day Cummings Drive into a suburban addition. After the North Richland Hills Civic League was denied annexation by Richland Hills, residents voted to form their own city; the Jones Farm tract, population about 500, incorporated as North Richland Hills in 1953. The community of Smithfield was annexed by 1960; population grew from 8,662 (1960) to 69,917 (2020).
Local economy. The city is home to over 1,200 businesses and roughly 30 major employers. HealthMarkets, an insurance company, is headquartered in North Richland Hills. Top employers include the City of North Richland Hills, Walmart Supercenters, Birdville ISD, Medical City North Hills hospital, and Tarrant County College Northeast. Tyson Foods maintains a significant local operation. In the 1980s the business base was broad, producing everything from computers (Tandy Advanced Products) to mattresses (Ohio Sealy).
Culture and community. NRH2O Family Water Park is a signature summer attraction. The city runs the well-regarded Iron Horse Golf Course. Recent family attractions include Peppa Pig Theme Park Dallas Fort Worth and Malibu Jack's indoor theme park. The NYTEX Sports Centre hosts the Lone Star Brahmas junior hockey team. U.S. News named the city #64 nationally and #19 in Texas among Best Places to Live in 2025, and Money Magazine listed it among the Top 100 Best Places to Live in 2006.
What makes North Richland Hills distinct. The city was literally born of a rejection: residents incorporated NRH in 1953 only after the neighboring town of Richland Hills refused to annex them. Streets in the original section were named for local families; a 1954 section had its streets named after automobiles. Notable people with NRH ties include 1996 PGA Champion golfer Mark Brooks, bestselling novelist Sandra Brown, Big Time Rush's Logan Henderson, and MLB outfielder Trent Grisham. At incorporation the entire city was 268 acres with about 500 residents; it now covers a full suburban footprint of nearly 70,000 people.
