A Utah Valley city at the foot of Mount Timpanogos, Orem proudly calls itself 'Family City USA' and anchors the region alongside neighboring Provo. Once known for fruit orchards and mid-century steel, it is now a college town built around Utah Valley University, the state's largest university by enrollment. It is the fifth-most populous city in Utah.

About Orem
Also known as. Family City USA.
History. Ute people long inhabited Utah Valley before Mormon pioneers settled the area, then called the 'Provo Bench,' in the 1870s. The community was known variously as 'Sharon' and 'Provo Bench' before being named after Walter C. Orem, president of the Salt Lake and Utah Railroad, to attract rail service; it incorporated on May 5, 1919. Early Orem was defined by fruit orchards, and the nearby Geneva Steel works drove industrialization in the 1940s during and after World War II. The city grew from just 435 residents in 1890 to 98,129 in the 2020 census, making it Utah's fifth-largest city.
Local economy. Utah Valley University, the largest university in Utah by enrollment with more than 48,000 students, is the top employer; the Alpine School District and the City of Orem follow. Orem has a notable tech-startup pedigree: WordPerfect Corporation, Novell, Blendtec, Omniture, and Fishbowl are among companies founded or based in the city. University Mall and the State Street retail corridor have long been major commercial centers, a legacy of the city's postwar shift toward retail and services. Utah Valley Hospital and other healthcare providers add to the employment base of the Provo-Orem metro area.
Culture and community. SCERA, the Sharon Community Educational Recreational Association founded in 1933, operates a 1941 showhouse and the SCERA Shell outdoor amphitheater (added in 1984) for concerts, films, and theater. The Colonial Heritage Festival, held around the Fourth of July, bills itself as the largest colonial American living-history event in the Western United States. The city's summer festival, formerly Summerfest and renamed Oremfest after a 2022 trademark dispute, features parades and concerts, and the UVU Wolverines anchor college athletics. Entertainer and dancer Julianne Hough was born in Orem, and the region has deep ties to the Osmond family.
What makes Orem distinct. Blendtec, the Orem-based blender maker, launched its viral 'Will It Blend?' video series by pulverizing iPhones, marbles, and golf balls. The city's 'Family City USA' nickname reflects its family-centric identity; as of 2002 an estimated 97% of churchgoers in Orem were Latter-day Saints. Orem is named after a railroad executive to lure his rail line to the 'Provo Bench,' rather than after a local founder or landmark. The Colonial Heritage Festival stages Revolutionary-era reenactors and artisans in the desert West, far from the original Thirteen Colonies.
