Web Design for Palatine, Illinois

Palatine is a leafy northwest suburb of Chicago in Cook County that grew up around an 1866 railroad station and still bills itself as "A Real Home Town." It is the birthplace of the Weber kettle grill and home to Deer Grove, the very first forest preserve acquired in Cook County. The village blends commuter-rail convenience, big regional high schools, and a summer calendar of Streetfest and Oktoberfest.

AppWT works with Palatine, IL businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Palatine

Also known as. A Real Home Town (official village motto). Palatinians (demonym for residents).

History. Founded in 1866 around a station on the new Chicago and North Western Railway; Joel Wood surveyed and platted the village and is regarded as its founder. First European-American settler is generally credited as George Ela, who built a log cabin in the Deer Grove area after the Black Hawk War; Ela Road honors him. The name is thought to be taken from a town in New York State. Hosted the Cook County Fair from 1914 to 1931. In 1920 the Indian Fellowship League held one of the first American Indian Day celebrations at nearby Camp Reinberg, reportedly drawing roughly 60,000 people.

Local economy. Weber-Stephen Products, maker of the Weber grill, is headquartered in Palatine. Two large public school systems anchor local employment: Community Consolidated School District 15 and Township High School District 211. A U.S. Postal Service facility is among the village's largest employers. Primarily a residential Chicago commuter suburb served by Metra's Union Pacific Northwest Line, with a 2020 population of about 67,900.

Culture and community. Streetfest, an August festival with food vendors, live music, and carnival rides. Annual Fourth of July celebration with a parade, carnival, and fireworks. Oktoberfest, launched in 2008 and run by the Rotary Club, with German music and craft beer in September. A large Sikh gurdwara (the Sikh Religious Society) serves the area's Sikh community. Hometown of rock guitarist Ted Nugent and Academy Award-winning cinematographer Mauro Fiore.

What makes Palatine distinct. The 1993 Brown's Chicken massacre, in which seven employees were killed, went unsolved for nine years until DNA and a tip led to convictions of Juan Luna and James Degorski. Palatine is often cited as Illinois' largest municipality with no official seal or flag after a 1990s legal fight over a cross on the village seal ended with the seal being dropped. Deer Grove was where the Cook County forest-preserve system literally began. The village name traces to Palatine, New York, rather than to any local feature.

Palatine is a large northwest Cook County suburb centered on a revitalized downtown around its Metra station, and it hosts a nationally known Sikh gurdwara.
