About Park Ridge

Also known as. Pennyville (early name, after brickyard founder George Penny). Brickton (mid-1800s name from its brick-making industry).

History. The area was inhabited by the Potawatomi until their removal in 1833; the first settlers arrived from New England and New York in the early 1830s, drawn to a portage between the Des Plaines and Chicago rivers. George Penny established a brickyard around 1853, and the settlement became known as Pennyville, then Brickton by 1858, as clay deposits fueled brick manufacturing. The arrival of the railroad spurred growth, and the community was renamed Park Ridge in 1873 for its position on a ridge. Population climbed from 2,009 in 1910 to 10,417 in 1930 and peaked at 42,466 in 1970, easing to about 39,656 by 2020.

Local economy. Advocate Lutheran General Hospital is the city's largest employer, with roughly 3,693 workers. Maine Township High School District 207, the Park Ridge Park District, and Park Ridge-Niles School District 64 are among the top employers. The city's historic economy was built on brick manufacturing that supplied building material for a growing Chicago. Park Ridge is notably affluent, with a median household income around $113,809.

Culture and community. The Taste of Park Ridge food festival is held every July in the Uptown district. The Pickwick Theatre operates as a movie house and venue for plays and concerts. Uptown Park Ridge is the walkable shopping-and-dining core of the city.

What makes Park Ridge distinct. Hillary Rodham Clinton grew up in Park Ridge and graduated from Maine South High School in 1965; for her 50th birthday in 1997 the city named the corner of Elm and Wisner streets "Rodham Corner." Harrison Ford attended Maine East High School, where he was credited as the first sports announcer for the student radio station WMTH-FM. James Pankow, a founding member of the rock band Chicago, is from Park Ridge. Park Ridge locations appear in the films The Blues Brothers (1980) and Home Alone (1990). The city has a sister-city relationship with Kinver, Staffordshire, England, dating to 1998.

Park Ridge is an established northwestern Chicago suburb about 15 miles from downtown, incorporated in 1873 and once nicknamed 'Brickton' for its brickmaking industry. It is a family-oriented community served by Metra commuter rail.
