Pearland is one of the fastest-growing suburbs in the Houston metropolitan area, seated mainly in Brazoria County with slivers reaching into Harris and Fort Bend counties. Named for the pear orchards that a Polish nobleman promoted in the 1890s, it has transformed from open prairie farmland into a booming residential and healthcare center, more than tripling in population since 2000. Master-planned communities like Shadow Creek Ranch define much of its modern character.

About Pearland
History. The community began near a railroad siding on the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway in 1882. A post office established in 1893 named the settlement 'Mark Belt,' after landowner Mark Belt, who sorted mail from his home. On September 24, 1894, Witold von Zychlinski filed a plat naming the townsite 'Pear-Land' after the area's pear trees; the name was standardized to Pearland that November. The Southern Homestead Company advertised to Midwestern buyers to come grow pears, though a devastating 1900 hurricane wiped out much of the orchard industry.
Local economy. Pearland is repeatedly ranked among the fastest-growing cities in Texas and the nation; its population reached 125,828 in the 2020 census, up from 91,252 in 2010. Health care and life sciences drive much of recent job growth, with Kelsey-Seybold Clinic a major employer in the Shadow Creek Ranch area. The city grew 142% between 2000 and 2010, ranking it the 15th-fastest-growing U.S. city over that decade. Its location just south of Houston makes it a magnet for logistics, professional services and residential development.
Culture and community. The Celebration of Freedom on July 4 features live music and an extended fireworks display at Independence Park. The Pearland Crawfish Festival in Shadow Creek Ranch and the Pearland Country Music Showcase at Pearland Town Center are recurring community draws. The Pear-Scape Trail is a public art series of 21 four-foot fiberglass pear sculptures painted by local artists. The city's growing diversity is reflected in institutions like the Sri Meenakshi Temple community.
What makes Pearland distinct. Locals pronounce it 'PAIR-land' (like the fruit or 'pair'); newcomers who say 'PEARL-and' (like the gem) give themselves away. The town is literally named for pear trees, most of which a 1900 hurricane destroyed not long after the name was chosen. Its founding plat was filed by Witold von Zychlinski, described as a Polish nobleman. The Sri Meenakshi Temple sits in unincorporated Brazoria County within Pearland's postal area and extraterritorial jurisdiction, yet is globally singular as the only Meenakshi-dedicated temple outside India.
A fast-growing, family-oriented suburb south of Houston that blends new master-planned development with its self-described 'Where Town Meets Country' Gulf Coast roots.
