History. Richard Peters settled the area as early as 1824 and became the first postmaster when the Summerfield post office opened in April 1831. Monroe men Thomas Cole and Austin Wing formally platted the community on land bought from Peters on August 1, 1836; it was first called Summerfield. The post office was renamed "Petersburgh" on January 14, 1863, then shortened to "Petersburg" on December 18, 1893. Incorporated as a village in 1869 (reincorporated 1895) and became a city in 1967. Served by two rail lines, the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad and the Toledo & Detroit / narrow-gauge Toledo & Petersburgh routes, which fueled its 19th-century growth.
Local economy. Grew as a water-powered mill town on the River Raisin; by 1877 it supported flouring mills, a woolen factory, a handle factory, planing, saw, and shingle mills, and a cheese factory. Railroad access made it a shipping point for area farm goods in western Monroe County's agricultural belt. Today it is a small residential and agricultural community served by the Summerfield School District (about 775 students).
Culture and community. Summerfield School District teams are the Petersburg-Summerfield Bulldogs. The Summerfield/Petersburg Community Days is the area's local festival. Longstanding Tree City USA participation reflects a community emphasis on tree planting and care.
What makes Petersburg distinct. At roughly 0.49 square miles, Petersburg is the second-smallest incorporated city by land area in all of Michigan, after Clarkston. It carries the century-old booster nickname "a good, live town," coined by historian George Lang in 1917 and still embraced locally. Despite its tiny footprint, it operates as a full city with an elected mayor and clerk. The city changed names twice, from Summerfield to Petersburgh to Petersburg, before settling on the current spelling in 1893. Petersburg was the birthplace of pioneering neuroanatomist Elizabeth C. Crosby, later a National Medal of Science recipient.
