History. Settled in 1819 as a trading post by Joseph Bonne, an interpreter who built a log cabin above the Arkansas River after a great flood; the site was once called Mount Marie. Officially named 'The Town of Pine Bluff' by the county court on October 16, 1832, for the pine forest on the bluff. During the Civil War, Union troops under Colonel Powell Clayton repelled a Confederate cavalry assault at the Battle of Pine Bluff on October 25, 1863. Entered a 'Golden Era' in the 1880s, and by 1890 cotton and river commerce had made it the state's third-largest city. Branch Normal College, founded in 1873, evolved into the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, a historically Black university.
