History. Undeveloped Oakland County was labeled the Great Swamp when surveyed in 1817, but a strip of high, ancient beach ridge, easily traveled on foot and horse, became Ridge Road and the spine of the future town. Founded in 1913 when Burt Taylor subdivided the Mayday farm; by 1912-1913 about ten families had formed the first community. The Walter Gehrke Company developed much of the subdivision, with most homes built between 1910 and 1930. Incorporated as a village within Royal Oak Township in 1921, then as an autonomous city in 1927. One account credits the name to an early resident from Pleasant Valley, Kentucky, who paired 'pleasant' with 'ridge' and named the Pleasant Ridge Country Club; another traces it simply to Ridge Road. The city actively fought construction of the middle segment of Interstate 696 in the early 1960s; the freeway ultimately became its northern border.
Local economy. Almost entirely residential, functioning as an affluent inner-ring bedroom community for metro Detroit professionals. Early residents set the tone as a professional-class enclave, including physicians, attorneys, university professors, and General Motors and Ford executives. Woodward Avenue (M-1) runs through the center of the city and carries its limited commercial frontage. The 2020 census recorded 1,111 households, 58.2 percent of them married couples, supporting a high-income residential tax base. The entire city is served by Ferndale Public Schools rather than its own district.
