Prescott Valley is a young, fast-growing town in central Arizona's Yavapai County, about eight miles east of the older city of Prescott in a high-desert basin once known as Lonesome Valley. Unlike most Arizona towns it has no frontier-era downtown; it was created in the 1960s by a Phoenix real-estate company that sold home lots to Midwesterners, and it did not incorporate until 1978. A mild four-season climate and affordable housing have made it a magnet for retirees and one of Arizona's faster-growing communities.

About Prescott Valley
Also known as. Lonesome Valley. PV.
History. The area was inhabited some 1,400 years ago by early Mountain Patayan people, whose artifacts survive at the Fitzmaurice Ruins. The Walker Party found gold along Lynx Creek in 1863; the Lynx Creek placers went on to produce a recorded 29,000 troy ounces of gold. Ranchers settled 'Lonesome Valley' in the 1880s, raising beef to supply miners and new settlers. In the mid-1960s Prescott Valley Inc., a Phoenix real-estate company, bought the land and sent representatives to the Midwest to sell home lots. In 1978, 80 percent of voters approved incorporation as a town; Prescott Valley celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2018.
Local economy. The economy is a mix of industrial, manufacturing, retail, and service businesses. Prescott Valley is a popular retirement destination thanks to relatively inexpensive housing and a mild climate. Its rapid population growth has made retail and services a growing part of the local economy.
Culture and community. The Findlay Toyota Center, a roughly 5,100-seat arena, anchors concerts, sporting events, and community festivals. Fain Park offers trails, a lake, and outdoor concerts and festivals throughout the year. The Prescott Valley Civic Center, completed in 1999, includes Town Hall, the library, an outdoor amphitheater, a splash pad, and hosts concerts and farmers markets. Annual events include a town Christmas Parade, Pioneer Days celebrations, and a multi-day community festival with a Lions Club parade and carnival. The Findlay Toyota Center is home to the Northern Arizona Wranglers indoor football team (Indoor Football League, since 2021); it previously hosted the Arizona Sundogs (CHL hockey, 2006-2014) and the Northern Arizona Suns (NBA G League, 2016-2019).
What makes Prescott Valley distinct. Originally called Lonesome Valley, the town was essentially invented by a real-estate company that marketed lots to Midwesterners, so it lacks a historic frontier downtown. Nearby Lynx Creek was one of Arizona's richest placer gold streams, yielding about 29,000 recorded troy ounces. Glassford Hill is named for Colonel William A. Glassford, who in the 1880s helped build a network of 27 heliograph stations to signal across the territory. The town's NBA G League team, the Northern Arizona Suns, later relocated all the way to Detroit.
