Web Design for Pueblo, Colorado

Pueblo is a southern Colorado city on the Arkansas River that built its identity on the Colorado Fuel & Iron steel mill, earning the name 'Steel City.' It is also called the 'Home of Heroes' for producing four Medal of Honor recipients, among the most per capita of any U.S. city, and it is fiercely proud of the Pueblo green chile that anchors its food scene. The city hosts the Colorado State Fair and has reinvented a mill-town economy around healthcare, government, and clean energy.

AppWT works with Pueblo, CO businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Pueblo

Also known as. Steel City. The Pittsburgh of the West. Home of Heroes. Chile Capital (of Colorado).

History. Modern Pueblo was assembled from four separate towns, Pueblo (1870), South Pueblo (1873), Central Pueblo (1882), and Bessemer (1886), which consolidated between 1886 and 1894. The Colorado Fuel & Iron (CF&I) steel mill opened in 1882 and made Pueblo an industrial powerhouse; by 1909 it was the only steel town west of the Mississippi River. For nearly a century CF&I was the largest private employer in the state of Colorado. The steel-market crash of 1982 gutted the mill and the local economy; after bankruptcies the works were acquired by Oregon Steel Mills and later became Rocky Mountain Steel / EVRAZ. A devastating flood in 1921 reshaped the downtown and the Arkansas River channel, later commemorated by the Riverwalk.

Local economy. Once dominated by steel, Pueblo now leans on healthcare: UCHealth Parkview Medical Center is the top employer (roughly 4,000+ jobs). Government and public institutions are major employers, including the Colorado Mental Health Hospital at Pueblo and Pueblo School District 60. EVRAZ Rocky Mountain Steel still operates the historic mill, though at a fraction of its former workforce. The city has courted clean-energy manufacturing, including wind-turbine and solar development. Today only a small share of Pueblo jobs are in manufacturing, with retail, food service, and legal cannabis also part of the mix.

Culture and community. The Pueblo Chile & Frijoles Festival celebrates the local green chile with 200+ vendors, dozens of live bands, and roughly 140,000 visitors a year. The signature dish is the 'slopper,' an open-faced cheeseburger smothered in green chile sauce and topped with onions and cheese. The Pueblo chile, a variety of the mirasol pepper, is prized as slightly hotter than an Anaheim with an earthy sweetness, and the city rivals New Mexico's Hatch in chile pride. The Colorado State Fair, the state's largest single event, is held in Pueblo each summer/fall. CF&I's hiring made Pueblo a 'Melting Pot of the West,' at its peak home to dozens of languages and immigrant newspapers, still reflected in ethnic neighborhoods and food.

What makes Pueblo distinct. Pueblo adopted the 'Home of Heroes' name in 1993 for its four Medal of Honor recipients: William J. Crawford, Drew Dennis Dix, Raymond G. Murphy, and Carl L. Sitter. When awarding Raymond Murphy his medal, President Eisenhower reportedly asked, 'What is it, something in the water out there in Pueblo?' The federal consumer-publications distribution center in Pueblo received so much mail that the Postal Service gave it its own ZIP code, 81009 -- immortalized by decades of 'Write to Pueblo, Colorado' TV ads. Pueblo ties Holland, Michigan for the most Medal of Honor recipients per capita of any U.S. municipality. An annual 'Top Slopper' contest crowns the best green-chile slopper, with a traveling trophy passed between local taverns.
