About Randleman
History. Union Manufacturing Company built the town's first textile mill on the Deep River in 1848; its stockholders came from the nearby Quaker settlement of New Salem. In 1868 the mill was bought by John Banner Randleman and John H. Ferree, who formed the Randleman Manufacturing Company; the town was incorporated in 1880 and named for John Banner Randleman. In 1911 the Randleman and Naomi Falls water-powered mills merged with the Plaidville and Marie Antoinette steam mills to form Deep River Mills, Inc.
Local economy. Randleman grew as a textile mill town on the Deep River; by the 1910s Deep River Mills, Inc. owned about 150 dwellings and employed roughly 800 of the town's 2,500 residents. The NASCAR operation Petty Enterprises was based in nearby Level Cross, and the Richard Petty Museum in Randleman draws motorsports tourism to the area.
Culture and community. The Richard Petty Museum, established in 1998, displays vintage race cars and memorabilia from the Petty racing family's collection. A bronze statue of NASCAR driver Richard Petty stands along Main Street (US 220) in Randleman. The murder ballad 'Omie Wise,' one of the oldest American folk ballads, is based on the 1807 death of Naomi Wise in the Deep River near Randleman.
What makes Randleman distinct. Randleman is the hometown region of the Petty NASCAR dynasty, including Lee Petty and Richard 'The King' Petty, whose shops were in adjacent Level Cross.
