About Redding
Also known as. Poverty Flats (historic). Trails Capital of California.
History. During the California Gold Rush the settlement was called Poverty Flats. In 1868 Benjamin B. Redding, land agent for the Central Pacific Railroad, bought property at Poverty Flats for a northern rail terminus, and the railroad built a town named in his honor. The railroad town of Redding was officially incorporated on October 4, 1887. Early-1900s growth was fueled by nearby copper and iron mining, which declined by around 1920, causing the economy and population to falter. Construction of Shasta Dam, completed in 1945, nearly doubled Redding's population and spurred regional growth, followed by a 1950s boom in the lumber industry and dam-driven tourism.
Local economy. Health care and social assistance is the largest employment sector, anchored by Dignity Health's Mercy Medical Center Redding and Shasta Regional Medical Center. Retail trade and accommodation/food services are among the next-largest industries, reflecting Redding's role as a regional shopping and service center. Tourism tied to Shasta Lake, Whiskeytown, and the Sundial Bridge is a significant economic driver. Lumber and construction have historically been important pillars of the local economy.
Culture and community. Kool April Nites, launched in 1990, is a multi-day classic-car celebration billed as the largest classic car show in Northern California. Turtle Bay Exploration Park anchors the arts, science, and nature scene, connected across the Sacramento River by the Sundial Bridge. Redding has a state-recognized Cultural District downtown featuring numerous public-art sites, murals, cafes, and live-music venues. Bethel Church, a nondenominational megachurch founded in 1954 with a congregation of roughly 10,000, draws students and visitors from around the world and shapes the city's cultural profile.
What makes Redding distinct. The 2018 Carr Fire, sparked July 23 by a vehicle's mechanical failure near Whiskeytown, generated a rare, deadly fire tornado, burned more than 131,000 acres, and destroyed over 1,000 homes. The Sundial Bridge actually tells time, casting a shadow that moves across a dial on the north riverbank. The city was originally named 'Poverty Flats' before the railroad renamed it after Benjamin Redding. Redding brands itself the 'Trails Capital of California' for its extensive river and mountain trail network.
