About Richardson
Also known as. The Telecom Corridor (name trademarked by the Richardson Chamber of Commerce in 1992).
History. The town moved to the Houston & Texas Central Railroad line and was named for Alfred S. Richardson, a railroad company secretary, with the settlement taking shape in the early 1870s. A 1908 interurban electric railway connected Richardson to Dallas, Denison, Waco, and Corsicana. The tech era began when Texas Instruments chose a Richardson-area campus in 1956 and Collins Radio built on a 400-acre site in 1957. A 1980s boom brought telecom firms such as MCI Communications, most clustered within a mile of Central Expressway, cementing the 'Telecom Corridor' identity. The city grew from about 600 residents in 1910 to 119,469 by the 2020 Census.
Local economy. State Farm Insurance is the largest employer (about 8,000 workers), followed by AT&T (about 5,000). Other major employers include Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, the University of Texas at Dallas, Richardson ISD, RealPage, GEICO, UnitedHealthcare, Raytheon, and Fujitsu Network Communications. Corporate headquarters in the city include Metro by T-Mobile, Fossil Group, Lennox International, id Software, and Samsung's U.S. mobile operations. The State Farm and CityLine development off the President George Bush Turnpike helped drive property values from about $8.3 billion (2005) to roughly $14 billion (2017).
Culture and community. The Wildflower! Arts & Music Festival, launched in 1993, is a three-day May event with six stages and 100-plus performers. The Cottonwood Art Festival, running since 1969, is a nationally ranked juried fine-art fair held each May in Cottonwood Park. DFW Chinatown, along Greenville Avenue, is the metroplex's Chinese-American cultural hub, begun by Chinese investors in the mid-1980s and now full of Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese restaurants, bakeries, and an Asian grocery. Richardson has notable Arab American, Indian (home to the Indian Association of North Texas), and Vietnamese communities, reflecting a highly diverse population.
What makes Richardson distinct. Richardson was effectively a 'dry city' with no alcohol sales until voters approved beer and wine sales in November 2006. id Software, creator of Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein 3D, is headquartered in Richardson (it moved there in spring 2011). Pearl Jam's 1991 song 'Jeremy' was inspired by Jeremy Wade Delle, a student at Richardson High School. The DART Silver Line commuter rail, connecting DFW Airport to Richardson's UT Dallas and CityLine stations, began service on October 25, 2025.
