Web Design for Richmond, Virginia
Richmond is Virginia's capital, set on the falls of the James River, where founding-era history meets a young, arts-driven present. Patrick Henry's 'give me liberty or give me death' speech rang out here in 1775, and the city later served as the capital of the Confederacy. Today it is a River City known for murals, VCU students, tobacco heritage, and Fortune 500 headquarters, and it functions as an independent city bordered by Chesterfield and Henrico counties.

About Richmond
Also known as. The River City. RVA. Paris of the South (19th-century).
History. Richmond was founded in 1737 (laid out by William Byrd II) and named after Richmond upon Thames in England; it replaced Williamsburg as Virginia's capital in 1780. Patrick Henry delivered his 'Give me liberty or give me death!' speech in 1775 at St. John's Church. Richmond served as the capital of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, and much of the city burned in the 1865 evacuation fire. The historically Black Jackson Ward district was known as the 'Black Wall Street of America' and the 'Harlem of the South.' In 1903, Maggie L. Walker chartered the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank in Jackson Ward, becoming the first African American woman to charter and serve as president of a U.S. bank. Richmond became a legally independent city (separate from any county) in 1871.
Local economy. Law, finance, and government anchor the economy; Richmond hosts the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, and the Virginia Supreme Court. The city has deep tobacco roots; Altria, a Fortune 500 company and parent of Marlboro-maker Philip Morris USA, is based in the Richmond region. The economy has diversified into logistics, finance, and technology while retaining its historical tobacco ties.
Culture and community. Richmond's dining scene tops 900 restaurants, including soul-food landmark Mama J's Kitchen in Jackson Ward and the acclaimed Lemaire. Downtown is home to 150-plus outdoor murals, many created through the annual Richmond Mural Project. The Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, play in the Eastern League. Writer Edgar Allan Poe grew up in Richmond, which is home to the Poe Museum.
What makes Richmond distinct. Maggie L. Walker was the first African American woman in the United States to charter and lead a bank, and she ran it for nearly 30 years. Hollywood Cemetery features a cast-iron Newfoundland dog statue that stands guard over the grave of a young girl who died in 1862, and it holds the remains of two U.S. presidents plus roughly 18,000 Confederate soldiers. Edgar Allan Poe spent his childhood in Richmond after his family moved there for his mother's acting career. Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy, giving it a layered and contested public-history landscape.
