Richmond is a small city of about 5,900 in northeastern Macomb County (spilling into St. Clair County), roughly 38 miles northeast of downtown Detroit. It was stitched together in 1878 from three separate settlements and is best known for its Good Old Days Festival, a four-day tradition running every year since 1964. The area also carries a quirky agricultural legacy, from a district nicknamed Muttonville to a once-thriving cluster of Japanese American flower nurseries.
AppWT serves Richmond and the surrounding Michigan area from Livonia, Michigan.
About Richmond
Also known as. Home of the Good Old Days Festival. "Muttonville" -- historic nickname of the former sheep-slaughtering district later annexed into the city.
History. Erastus Beebe founded Beebe's Corners in 1835. In 1878 three communities -- Beebe's Corners, Ridgeway, and Cooper (Cooper Town) -- merged to form the village of Richmond. The village charter came in 1879, and Richmond incorporated as a city in 1966. In 1989 the city annexed the Muttonville area from Lenox Township, a hamlet named for having been the principal slaughterhouse of a predominantly sheep-raising district. The city sits mostly in Macomb County with a portion in St. Clair County.
Local economy. Historically an agricultural trading center for the surrounding farm townships. Home to a notable cluster of Japanese American flower nurseries; families such as the Oishi and Sakai returned after WWII incarceration under Executive Order 9066 and operated their nurseries until the properties were sold around 2006. Now a small-city hub within Metro Detroit's northeastern edge. The Macomb Orchard Trail, a 23.5-mile rail-trail, has an endpoint at Richmond, supporting recreation-linked activity.
Culture and community. The Richmond Area Good Old Days Festival has run every year since 1964, held the weekend after Labor Day from Thursday through Sunday. Festival features include a parade, demolition derbies, a car show with over 100 vehicles, carnival rides, vendors, and fireworks. The Richmond Area Historical and Genealogical Society opens its Historic Village during the festival with primitive-arts demonstrations and strawberry shortcake. Community life centers on the downtown and Beebe Street Memorial Park.
What makes Richmond distinct. Present-day Richmond was assembled from three once-separate villages: Beebe's Corners, Ridgeway, and Cooper. The annexed "Muttonville" district got its name from serving as the main slaughterhouse for a sheep-raising area. Japanese American nursery families reclaimed and revived their Richmond flower businesses after wartime incarceration, running them for decades afterward. The Good Old Days Festival is old enough that some families have volunteered for it across generations.
Richmond grew from the 1835 settlement of Beebe's Corners, which joined with Ridgeway and Cooper Town in 1878 to form one village, and the city now serves as a starting point of the 23.5 mile Macomb Orchard Trail
Notable. The Great Michigan Parade at the Richmond Good Old Days Festival has been recognized as Michigan's Best Small Town Parade by The Detroit News.
