History. The Battle of Monguagon was fought here on August 9, 1812, when American forces clashed with a British-Native American coalition; the famed Shawnee leader Tecumseh was wounded in the engagement, and much of the battlefield remains undeveloped. Riverview was incorporated as a village in 1923 -- formed in part by merging area land including a section known as 'Wyandotte Heights' -- and became a city in 1959. The city grew explosively in the postwar era, with population jumping more than 400% between 1950 and 1960. During the Cold War the U.S. Department of Defense operated Nike missile launch site D-54 at what is now Young Patriots Park.
Local economy. A largely residential Downriver suburb, roughly 4.67 square miles, with about 12,490 residents in 2020. The city-owned Riverview Land Preserve landfill (opened 1969) is a notable municipal asset; landfill gas collected on site powers a green-energy project with the utility (Detroit Edison/DTE) that generates enough electricity for about 3,700 homes. Riverview Highlands, a 27-hole municipal golf property, operates on and around the former landfill ski site.
Culture and community. Riverview identifies strongly with the Downriver community of southern Wayne County. Golf at Riverview Highlands and the recreation legacy of the old ski hill are part of local identity, along with War of 1812 heritage from the Monguagon battlefield.
What makes Riverview distinct. In the 1980s Riverview ran a full ski resort on top of a garbage dump, with two quad lifts, handle tows, eight slopes and about 190 feet of vertical. Heat from decomposing trash inside the landfill kept melting the snow, and the unprofitable ski hill was decommissioned in the 1990s and converted to golf. The buried garbage now pays off differently: captured landfill gas generates electricity for roughly 3,700 homes.
