About Rockford
Also known as. The Forest City. Screw Capital of the World / Screw City. Fastener Capital of the World.
History. Settled in 1834 as 'Midway,' positioned roughly halfway between Chicago and Galena on the Rock River; renamed 'Rockford' in 1837 for a rocky ford across the river and chartered as a city on January 3, 1852. Rockford Female Seminary (now Rockford University) was founded in 1847; social-reform pioneer and future Nobel Peace laureate Jane Addams graduated from it in 1881. Inventor John Henry Manny arrived in 1853 to build mechanical reapers and won a famous patent fight against Cyrus McCormick, seeding the city's machine industry. Swedish immigrant furniture cooperatives made Rockford the nation's second-largest furniture manufacturer, behind Grand Rapids, in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The 1958 routing of Interstate 90 away from the city core, and the loss of over 50,000 elms to Dutch elm disease in the late 1950s, both reshaped Rockford's development. A Chrysler auto plant chosen for the area in 1963 opened in 1965 as what became the Belvidere Assembly Plant, long a regional employment anchor.
Local economy. Aerospace and precision manufacturing remain core: Woodward, Inc. and Collins Aerospace each employ around 2,000 people locally. Health care is now the largest sector, led by UW Health/SwedishAmerican, Mercyhealth (which opened the $505M Javon Bea Hospital-Riverside in 2019), and OSF Healthcare. Logistics is a fast-growing pillar: the UPS Rockford Air Hub (~2,000 workers) is second only to Worldport in UPS Airlines operations, and Amazon runs a large fulfillment presence. The city's historic identity is built on fasteners, machine tools, and automotive supply, earning it the 'Screw Capital of the World' nickname.
Culture and community. Rockford is the hometown of rock band Cheap Trick; the city maintains a self-guided Cheap Trick Fan Trail linking sites from the band's early days. The Rockford Peaches of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (1943-1954) won four championships and inspired the 1992 film 'A League of Their Own'; their home, Beyer Stadium, has been partly restored. The Coronado Theatre, a lavish 1927 atmospheric movie palace, has hosted performers from the Marx Brothers and Frank Sinatra to Bob Dylan. The Mendelssohn Club, founded in 1884, is billed as the oldest operating music club in the United States. Current pro and amateur teams include the Rockford IceHogs (AHL hockey) and the Rockford Rivets (Northwoods League baseball). Local food traditions include the Rockford-founded Beef-A-Roo chain (roast-beef sandwiches and cheddar fries) and longtime Italian institutions like Lino's.
What makes Rockford distinct. The 1992 hit film 'A League of Their Own' is based on Rockford's real women's baseball team, the Rockford Peaches, four-time AAGPBL champions. Rockford lost more than 50,000 trees to Dutch elm disease in the late 1950s, temporarily undercutting its 'Forest City' nickname. Interstate 90 was deliberately routed past Rockford in 1958, a decision credited with steering major growth toward the suburbs and Chicago's collar counties. The Burpee Museum's juvenile T. rex, 'Jane,' is one of the most scientifically important dinosaur specimens in the world. Rockford's UPS air hub is one of the fastest-growing cargo airports in the country, second only to UPS's Louisville Worldport.
The largest Illinois city outside metro Chicago and seat of Winnebago County, nicknamed the Forest City for its heavily wooded residential neighborhoods and known historically as a fastener-manufacturing center.
