Rockwood was named after Rockwood, Ontario, Canada; the neighboring settlement of South Rockwood was named the same way by John Strong in 1863. Rockwood incorporated as a village on November 10, 1926; in 1937 its eastern land was returned to Brownstown Township. It officially became a city on August 19, 1964, with Irving Brewer as its first mayor. Construction of Interstate 75 fueled a postwar housing and business boom but also required demolition of many of the town's old homes and businesses; Rockwood celebrated its 125th anniversary in 1986 with four days of activities.

Local economy. Basket manufacturing was a defining early industry, supplying employment to residents from 1862 to 1922. Shipping on the Huron River was historically influential to the village's commerce. As a Downriver suburb, Rockwood's economy is tied to Wayne County's automotive manufacturing sector, and many residents commute to plants in the wider Detroit area.

Culture and community. Rockwood shares the tight-knit Downriver identity of southern Wayne County. Students attend the Gibraltar School District. Civic life took shape in the 1930s with the addition of a Michigan State Police post, St. Mary's School, and a Rotary Club; a community center and Food Town Plaza followed in the 1970s.

What makes Rockwood distinct. The city is named after a town in Ontario, Canada, not after any local 'rock' or 'wood.' For 60 years, from 1862 to 1922, Rockwood's economy leaned heavily on making baskets. Building I-75 boosted the population but bulldozed much of the old town in the process.
