Web Design for Rowlett, Texas

An upscale eastern suburb of Dallas, Rowlett spreads across two peninsulas that reach into Lake Ray Hubbard, giving the city more than 30 miles of shoreline about 20 minutes from downtown Dallas. Named for a creek that in turn honors an early Kentucky settler, the once-tiny cotton-gin town boomed after the reservoir was completed in 1971 and now holds more than 62,000 residents. It is still rebuilding parts of its southeast side struck by a deadly EF4 tornado on the day after Christmas in 2015.

AppWT works with Rowlett, TX businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Rowlett

Also known as. The place to live, work and play (city slogan). Lakefront community on Lake Ray Hubbard.

History. American settlers moved into the area in the 1840s, and Dallas County was organized in 1846. The first post office opened April 5, 1880, named 'Morris' for postmaster Austin Morris, then was renamed Rowlett for Rowlett Creek, a tributary of the East Fork of the Trinity River. The creek and city name honor Daniel Rowlett, who moved from Kentucky to Bonham, Texas, in 1835, though he never lived in the town that bears the name. By 1892 the town had about 200 residents, a general store, a mill, and a cotton gin operated by D.W. Housley. Eighty-four citizens voted unanimously to incorporate the city in 1952, when it had about 250 people and ten businesses. Completion of the Lake Ray Hubbard reservoir in 1971 triggered a building boom, with population climbing from 1,600 in 1973 to 62,535 by the 2020 census.

Local economy. Rowlett's economy is anchored by retail, healthcare, light manufacturing, logistics, and professional services serving the North Texas market. Baylor Scott & White Medical Center provides a major healthcare presence and employment base. Bimbo Bakeries USA operates food-manufacturing facilities in the area, alongside large retail employers such as Walmart. The city has courted large-scale development, including the planned Sapphire Bay resort project on Lake Ray Hubbard featuring a Hyatt hotel, a surf lagoon, and residential units. Its position on Interstate 30 and President George Bush Turnpike access ties Rowlett into the broader Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex economy.

Culture and community. Annual events include Spring Fest, a Memorial Day celebration, a summer concert series in Pecan Grove Park, 'Movies on Main' outdoor films, and an October Harvest Festival with live music and a pumpkin patch. A Farmers and Crafts Market runs downtown with live music on the last Thursday night of each month. Lake Ray Hubbard defines recreation, supporting boating, fishing, sailing, and lakeside festivals year-round. The city introduced a 'Culture Roulette' themed festival series in 2025 featuring cultural cuisine and live entertainment.

What makes Rowlett distinct. Rowlett is named for a man, Daniel Rowlett, who never actually lived in or dealt with the town that carries his name; the name passed through Rowlett Creek. The city's post office was originally called 'Morris' before being renamed Rowlett in the 1880s. Rowlett sits in two counties, mostly Dallas County with a portion in Rockwall County, and is built across two peninsulas jutting into Lake Ray Hubbard. On December 26, 2015, an EF4 tornado carved a 13-mile path from Sunnyvale and Garland through southeast Rowlett, destroying hundreds of homes; the city's historic 1980 water tower on Martha Lane was damaged and later demolished in February 2017. Rowlett drew international attention in 1996 when resident Darlie Routier was convicted in the murder of her children, a case still cited in true-crime coverage.
