About Sammamish
Also known as. The Plateau (for the Sammamish Plateau it sits on). Willow People (English meaning of the Lushootseed name).
History. The area was largely uninhabited until the 1870s; Martin Monohon became the first permanent non-Indian settler on the Sammamish Plateau in 1877. The name is an anglicization of the Lushootseed name of the Sammamish people, sc'ababs; historian David Buerge derives it from sc'ap ('willow') plus -abs ('people'), or 'willow people,' while linguist T.T. Waterman suggested 'meander dwellers.' Early settlers established a trio of lake resorts by the 1930s; suburban development began edging onto the plateau in the 1960s and accelerated late in the 20th century. The city incorporated on August 31, 1999. Sammamish annexed the Klahanie area on January 1, 2016, adding thousands of residents.
