San Clemente is a coastal city at the southern tip of Orange County, founded in 1925 by developer Ole Hanson as one of America's first master-planned communities, built to a strict Spanish Colonial Revival code of white stucco walls and red tile roofs. It is a world-renowned surfing town, home to the legendary Trestles break, and once served as President Richard Nixon's Western White House. Today it blends beach-town character with surf-industry headquarters and preserved 1920s architecture.

About San Clemente
Also known as. Spanish Village by the Sea.
History. Named in 1925 after San Clemente Island, which explorer Sebastian Vizcaino named in 1602 for Saint Clement, a first-century Pope. Founded by Ole Hanson, a former mayor of Seattle, who envisioned a 'Spanish Village by the Sea' where the whole city would be a park with preserved ocean views. On a rainy December day in 1925 Hanson drew about 600 prospective buyers from Los Angeles; he sold 1,200 lots within the first six months. Property deeds mandated Spanish Colonial Revival design with handmade red tile roofs and whitewashed stucco walls; Hanson would remodel or buy back non-compliant homes. Officially incorporated on February 28, 1928; by incorporation it was considered among the richest cities per capita in the United States. Hanson built his own home, Casa Romantica, in 1927 as the model for the town's architecture; it is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
