About San Leandro
Also known as. Cherry City. City of Industry.
History. First reached by Europeans on March 20, 1772, when Spanish captain Pedro Fages and Father Juan Crespi passed through; the name honors Leander of Seville, a sixth-century Spanish bishop. Jose Joaquin Estudillo received the roughly 9,000-acre Rancho San Leandro Mexican land grant in 1842, and the town was incorporated on March 21, 1872. Served as the Alameda County seat from 1856 until the 1868 Hayward earthquake destroyed the county courthouse; the seat was then moved toward Oakland. After World War II, restrictive covenants barred sales to Black and minority buyers, and by 1960 the city was 99.3% white; comedian Brian Copeland chronicled growing up there in his memoir 'Not a Genuine Black Man.'
Local economy. Economy centers on advanced manufacturing, health care, and business services; the San Leandro Tech Campus rose on the former Kaiser/Caterpillar plant site. Top employers (2015) included San Leandro Unified School District (about 1,380), Kaiser Permanente Medical Group (about 1,032), Ghirardelli Chocolate Company (about 487), and OSIsoft (about 364). Ghirardelli operates a chocolate manufacturing plant in the city, and the 21st Amendment Brewery is based there. The city built 'Lit San Leandro,' a fiber-optic broadband network that grew past 18 miles capable of 10 Gbit/s speeds, aided by a $2.1 million federal grant in 2012.
Culture and community. The San Leandro Cherry Festival, first held in 1909 to celebrate a bumper cherry crop, still fills historic downtown near Casa Peralta each year with a parade and street fair. Portuguese immigrants arrived from the 1880s and made up nearly two-thirds of the population by 1910, leaving a lasting Azorean cultural imprint. Sister cities reflect that heritage and later immigration: Ponta Delgada in the Portuguese Azores (since 1970), Naga in the Philippines (1989), and Ribeirao Preto in Brazil (1962).
What makes San Leandro distinct. The 'Cherry City' nickname dates to the 1909 festival marking a bumper cherry harvest, from an era when the town was a regional cherry-growing capital. The active Hayward Fault trace runs directly beneath Foothill Boulevard through the city. Fred Korematsu, the plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court case Korematsu v. United States, was from San Leandro. Notable natives include actor Lloyd Bridges, filmmaker Russ Meyer, and Korn drummer David Silveria.
A diverse East Bay city that grew from an industrial and food-processing hub and has drawn tech firms, artists, and brewers.
