About San Marcos
Also known as. Valley of Discovery. The education hub of North County.
History. Named on April 25, 1797, when Spanish troops came upon a fertile valley and called it 'Los Vallecitos de San Marcos' to honor St. Mark's Day. The original Rancho Vallecitos de San Marcos land grant was awarded on April 22, 1840, to Jose Maria Alvarado. Established as a settlement in the late 19th century known for dairy and poultry farming; the townsite was relocated about one mile to be near the railroad in 1903. The arrival of Colorado River water in 1956 sparked rapid growth, with the population jumping to about 2,500. Incorporated as a city on January 28, 1963, and became a charter city on July 4, 1994. San Marcos was the third fastest-growing city in California during the 1970s, reaching a population of 17,479 by 1980.

What makes San Marcos distinct. The town was physically relocated twice, including a one-mile move in 1903 to sit closer to the railroad. The nickname 'Valley of Discovery' comes directly from the 1797 St. Mark's Day discovery of the valley by Spanish troops. The illuminated cross above Lake San Marcos and the giant Palomar College 'P' on the hillside are both long-time visual landmarks visible from across the valley. The SPRINTER light rail links the two colleges, with stations at Palomar College and Cal State San Marcos, reflecting the city's 'education hub' identity.
